He apparently used an AOL email address, which means that the server was controlled by a private company (not the government), and Powell had sole control of his emails. So, he did use a private server, just one he shared with 24 million other people (making it the #1 hacking target in the world) (At they had a email security breach as recently as 2014)

Are you honestly saying that if instead a server in the Clinton's home, she used an email account from "Bob & Akbar's Internets to Go," you won't be complaining??

Actually using AOL is far worse than having her own server, since it gives far more vectors for security breach, and makes doing a full dump of the emails (for FBI scrutiny) nearly impossible. Clinton at least hired a security expert to harden the server to government levels. Powell also deleted ALL of his emails -- without concern if they were recorded on the government servers (which would be a serious violation of federal record keeping regulations)

I ALREADY ANSWERED that question.

The State Department email system was antiqued. Even Colin Powell confirmed that in the article I cited above. It did now allow reading email from a mobile device. Hence, a more modern email system was needed. Using an AOL email like Powell would be too insecure. A private server could be hardened to the security level needed.
