Pond drying up: a cornucopia of birds!

With our dry spell (35 days without rain during our wet season) the holding ponds at the wetlands are drying up. The outer pond is now drying up, and birds are coming from everywhere to eat the readily available birds, frogs, clams, whatever.

This is not very sharp - it is a panorama of several photos taken hand-held as the sun was setting. The number of species seen in this scene is amazing, though! Great blue herons, other herons, egrets, black-bellied whistling ducks, white pelicans, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, and more!

Was that at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge? Looks like more water than I saw last weekend!

Thanks, Angler - if nothing else it shows the amazing variety of birds that show up in one spot!

I need to get down there, one day. I live in Deland, so MIWR is my area of choice since it is closer. MIWR has been experiencing the same water issues-never have I seen so many areas dried up. I heard they had some rain last week and may run over there this afternoon to see if it was enough to help.

Very little has made it to the coast in the past week. That Blobulation in the gulf is just barely making us wet in Deland-as I type

Nice collection of birds.

Amazing though, I can't wait for the rain to stop (Florida Gulf coast). My grass is overgrown, but I have no intention of mowing in the rain.

Also - especially during winter months - don't miss the Orlando Wetlands in Christmas.

Yea- we have had a few showers, but nothing substantial. The guys on the Gulf Coast can send some our way!
