I am converting from an older HP system running Windows 7 to a new Apple Mac Pro very soon. My question is will I have any issues moving LR/PS CC and all my pictures over? I assume I will have to purchase all new software for just about everything else.

Thank you for any and all input.

You are opening up a new can of worms I love my Mac now but the change over was challenging and at time frustrating just formatting a USB stick was a dig dong. Stick with it is worth it.

New USB sticks come already formatted. One can always use whatever Operating System they are familiar with to do any formatting after that.

No you won't have any issues, when you load LR PS CC it will ask you to choose which computers to run it on if you have loaded it on more than two computers. Your pictures will be readable by either the Mac system or the Windows system. My photos are stored on my network storage and all the files are useable by either system.

Congrats on the new computer and enjoy, some different keys to learn for the shortcuts but not difficult.

Correct but when you need to wipe a USB stick it is not one click like it is on Windows.

I have a wonderful network set up which my windows 10, Appel Mac Pro iPad Windows Xp and Windows 7 all connect together and print. My point is, it is different and you will have to adjust, things are performed in a diffrent way. Once you get your head around that. It will be full steam ahead. There is truth in. When you go Mac you never go back! 😉😄😎

I recently bought an 8tb drive which I use as a network drive. It's called MyCloud. I have it installed on my home WiFi router. All files that I put on the drive are readable my logging in to it, from any computer, Iphone or what ever. Why such a big drive, partly because the price per tb was good, and partly because I have a lot of photos, 70,000, and a lot of other files that I used for my business. I put on 2 tb right from the get get go. I removed virtually all my non application files over from all my computers, as most were pretty much full. I also had some other drives with stuff which I copied over, but retained them on the old drives as backup. The only issue is speed. With using a remote network, the ability to read a file is slowed down. So, for things like photos, ones that I am opening and closing often I put them on my computers drive. For now, I basically keep the current years photos on my Mac pro. I also back them up on the network drive, just in case I need them on another computer. I plan on getting a Canon 5 dsr pretty soon, so file size will jump dramatically.

Your question has been answered but I wish to add that in my opinion you are making a very smart move. Others will disagree which is fine as they can continue to support Microsoft. When I made the switch from PC to Mac I decided to buy a used machine first to see how I liked the change. That used machine is now nearly 10 years old and what I am using to type this response with. It has started to show signs of it's age but keeps on ticking. When it dies, if it does I'll be replacing it with a new Mac Pro. Get past the learning curve which is small and you will be asking yourself why you waited so long. My only advice is to load it up with more memory and a larger SSD than you think you need. These things last a very long time so get it loaded now rather than later at a higher cost. Must admit I am just slightly envious.

I've got a MacPro but run Windows 10 on it. Some wonder why. My son said the MacPro was the best computer. I still liked Windows.

I just built a system for another photographer:

Intel i7 6700K overclocked to 5 ghz
ASUS Z170AR motherboard
Corsair H60 liquid cooling
32 gb DDR4 ram, with room for another 32 gb
NVidia Quadro K620 workstation graphics card, for 30 bit Adobe RGB color
1 TB m.2 Samsung SSD, EVO 850
(3) WD 4TB Black drives with 5 yr warranty - for a total of 12 TB
BluRay drive
USB2, USB3/3.1 and Thunderbolt 1
Expansion space for 7 more drives -
Diablotek Case, with 4 super quiet fans, total 5 chassis fans, 1 cpu fan.

Total price before tax was $1875.

I am not sure that a XEON cpu offers much of an advantage unless it has more than 4 cores which would be a benefit to Lightroom users. I also didn't find the dual ATI cards in the Mac Pro to offer much either, unless you are doing HQ video editing or intense gaming. For general photo editing, a reasonably fast card with 2 gb of VRAM is all you need.

Good luck with your MacPro - it is an awesome machine. Based on price and the limited available configurations for the MacPro, it just doesn't work for me as a best choice for photo editing.

As far as migrating your information, you should be able to set up an gigabit ethernet switch and two patch cables, or a simple crossover cable, and transfer data between the two machines.

Photoshop, Lightroom and many other publishers will give you, usually at no charge, the other platform's version of their titles. I have some clients that have both PC and Mac in their studios, and a single Photoshop/Lightroom CC license gives them 2 seats of each to use as they please.

I made the switch from a PC to an IMAC; and starting using LR/PS CC, last year. There is a learning curve, but the result is well worth the effort.

I have a MacBook Pro and I much, much, much prefer doing all my photo work on my PC with Win 7. I find the PC much more intuitive and easier to use than the Mac. I'm just not a Mac fan.

Why do you want a mac book pro? I work on a windows laptop but if I am going to do any photo/video work, I so much prefer my 27" 5k imac. I picked it up as a refurb from apple for $1800 with i7, 4ghz, 1tb fusion drive and 16gb ram. Not trying to cause problems, just need to know.

???? Disk Utility formats USB flash drives quickly and easily. If your destination devices support it, use the EXFAT format.
