500mm problems

Have a Sony SAL500F80 lens. The Lens is great but notice one problem I have been having. According to the stats this Lens is AF but when I attach it to a Sony a77M2 AF does not respond. Since this Lens has a f8 setting the AT only works on f settings that are f4 or lower.
Have any other people noticed this problem with the Lens that it is a manual focus on this Camera instead of auto focus.

On very few camera bodies will the AF respond at f8 and on some of those it could be spotty with little more than a huntathon.
Is that Sony body capable of responding at f8?
Then there is the lens. They may label it at f8 but they may be fudging it at a 1/2 stop or more! Good luck

All the other SAL Lenses I have auto focus nicely but not the 500. Called Sony and they explained that lenses with a f8 or higher the AF does not respond or is slow to respond regardless of light. Guess I will have to manual focus my shots instead of AF shooting.

I have that lens and that camera body and have no problems with auto focus outside of the fact that you will only get center spot focusing. That said it seems to focus fine. I find the broken to be unique on this lens. You cannot beat the weight. I strongly suggest you contact the seller and tell them you are returning it, because, as has just been stated, it should work on your camera.

There is something wrong with the lens, or the camera or both !

I have the Minolta version and it works fine with my A77ii. Try cleaning the contact pins of the lens and make sure the lens is locked in properly. Hope this helps.

I guess the last test would be to mount it on another a-mount Sony camera or old fIlm AF Minolta if you have one or a friend's.

I have the Minolta 500mm f 8 af reflex. I use it on the a-200, a-550, a-850, slt a-65 and the slt a-77. the auto focus works on all the cameras. the lens with a pro-optic 1.4 tc also works on all the cameras.

Make sure the little front left knob is not in manual setting.

No, set lens back and purchased a Konica Minolta lens. 500mm lens with AD on the lens.
