Thanks again for all your replies. Using the 7D mainly for birding I think I'll try for the 16-35 f2.8 if I can get it without the wife realising how much it costs. (Bet no one else has done that!)
I'm certainly not doing another but can't get out of this, so, yes, I'll practise, read up and hope for the best.

As long as she doesn't know what that red band on the lens means, maybe your wife is like mine; if the lens is white it cost a lot, if it's black, it didn't. Not exactly accurate but, it's a little white lie, pun intended, I'm willing to live with.
