I have moved through the Canon SX 10 and SX 40, loving them both. Now I have a thousand dollars and see the Canon t3i at Costco for $870. It is a two lens kit: 18-55 and 55-250. Can anybody see a downside to this? A more attractive scenario would be the body + a Tamron 18-270 lens and I know the conventional wisdom of buying that way, but $1,000 won't cover the body & lens combo, so it looks like I need to get my best "in the box" deal.

Suggestions & experiences are welcome.

You are buying into old technology! Look at the Nikon V1. Much smaller and lighter. True, price with an extra lens will be more than $1000, but with one lens much less. Save your cash and when you eventually need(?) the additional lens, I'm sure it will be vastly down in price, or Tamron will have an after market copy.

Hi djmills: There are many forum members that have that The Canon T3i and love it. For an in box deal of $870 the Canon T3i with two lenses is good value. Here is a website that will give a much better idea of the quality of the lenses. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html Not to confuse the issue for a thousand dollars you can also find some great deals on used bodies and lenses. Might be worth looking into check places like B&H, KEH, Adorama, Amazon, Craigs List etc.

T3i vs. V1. That really is a no brainer. No offense to the V1 fan meant.

We have Costco in Wales and England. I think they may also offer a better guarantee on the kit.
If you are starting on the DSLR trip then the Canon would be a good start.
Many people will tell you that it is the "glass" and the photographer that produce good resutls. Too true.
You can always sell your new lenses after trying them out. Look at reviews and buy something similar to the Tamron 18-270. Do not worry too much about " the best lens".
Enjoy using your set up until you have the wish and the money to upgrade the lenses first.

I think you would be better off keeping you old equipment and sending the $1000 to me.

Why in the world didn't I think of that in the first place?

Thanks. I haven't heard of anybody who is unhappy with the T3i.

DJ,

You probably have not seen this thread but the Tamron is not all it's cracked up to be. Read this thread: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-40447-1.html#648823

I think the kit lens is better than that Tamron; at least the kit lens focal lenghts will be as advertised. I thnk you'll be very happy. This is not to say that you won't want another upgrade a year from now. I bought the T2i and upgraded to a 7D a year later.

What is your main interest in photography? If it is landscape or portrait the T3i is a fine camera. If it is nature you will not be happy with it, the fps are not fast enough. If nature look for a good deal on a used Canon 50D or 7D camera.
