Two things to consider: What ap on the Mac will you use to open the file, and what file system is the media that you'll use to transfer the data? (OS X can read from, but not write data to NTFS. FAT32 and exFAT can be read/written by both Mac and PC)

Open office will run nicely on a Mac. It will import work documents, as well as export a doc. so Word can use it. Open office is a suite of office tools, equivalent to MS Office. It's free.

I've got a 2010 27" iMac and just checked. It's running an i7. Perhaps a call to Apple, or an Apple Store would provide you with some better information.

This site has a link to the specs for most IMacs - you can easily see which ones utilize an I7 processor. Some 27" IMacs have been utilizing I7s since 2009:

I found my iMac which was July 2009 and high end configuration. I will be selling and purchasing iMac 27" 16GB 17 processor and 2TB fusion. Was gonna go thu B & H because there is no tax and would be saving $250 but you have to wait for delivery and should you have a problem would have to send back.. Will buy thu the Apple store in Brea and get same day with no Apple care. And will have them wipe clean my old computer. Any advice!

Paragon software sells a driver that allows OS X to read/write NTFS and it is fairly cheap (around $30 as I recall).

Unless something has changed, Apple stocks stock computers in their stores. If you want extra memory, etc., you have to order it online - from someone.

Simple way to prove it. Have her send a doc she created with "can you open this?" as the content and you open it and add "yep, I can.". Then send it back. Done.

If the original file is MS WORD then the current version will work with it. MS WORD will also read most any older wordprocessing file. I've uploaded wordperfect files from the seventies into my Win 10 laptop and WORD reads them OK.

I'm using Microsoft Office 2008 on my IMac which has the latest OS --- OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.5 and it works fine.
