Nikon TC17E II Compatibility

I recently bought this TC for use with my Nikkor AFS 300mm f/4D lens. The chart and my sales rep at the local retailer both advised that it would not AF with my lens. I was not too fussed since I started shooting a long time ago and my last 300mm lens was the invincible f/4.5 AI version (manual focus). Used the combo yesterday for the first time and guess what. AF all the way! I am pretty pleased !!!!

They were both uninformed. On your D810 that lens will AF even with. 2X TC mounted.

Maybe the TC17E II predates the release of the D810? Nikon has an asterisk on the chart that indicates that the TC17E II is compatible with the AFS 300mm f/4D but will not AF. Anyway, I am very glad to have AF - it was a very pleasant surprise! EXIF indicates 500mm and body indicates effective aperture of f/6.7 Both close to expectations. Cheers.

The AF area will be reduced when you add a TC to an f/4 lens. How much it will be reduced depends on the camera and the magnification of the TC. My D500 manual shows how AF area changes based on the lens and the TC.
