Camera Guides

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I am about half way through reading the 990 pages of Thom Hogan's D500 Users Guide. If you own the Nikon D500, this will be the best $30 you could possibly spend. Mr. Hogan's guides are the most complete I have ever used. The guide not only gives the best instructions on how to use the camera in various situations, but also, why the camera works the way it does. There is insightful, usable information on virtually every page. The only downside for those of us that prefer hard copies, is that it is available only as an eBook. However, Mr. Hogan gives permission to have the eBook printed, if one so desires. These comments are on the D500 Users Guide. I also have his guides for numerous other SLRs and DSLRs. All very good!

I used to print everything because I hated reading on a computer. Once I got an 8 inch tablet the printer went silent. A smaller tablet or phone doesn't cut it.

I've tried several e readers and even on my 21 inch monitor and have found out that I am an old fashioned page turner. Nothing beat holding the book in your hands and reading it. There is too much tech stuff around the way it is. We don't have to turn our libraries into e books to. No thanks. I'll pass.

I used too be the same way. Ran through a lot of laser printer toner cartridges printing out manuals. An iPad has been the answer for me. Those that still resist, it's definitely their loss.

For those who hate to read on the computer. Try to get your computer to display at least one whole page clearly preferably 2 pages. You may have to purchase a new monitor to get this.

E-books and instruction manuals are useless to me; too hard to read and can never find anything. A book can be skimmed through to find what you are looking for and any page can be accessed in a a matter of seconds. Companies save no money on me when I buy something because they have an employee spend hours on the phone going over things with me when I have trouble. It's the save a dollar today but have it cost you a hundred tomorrow. The same goes with building stuff over seas and then spend three times the cost to building it here, on warranty repairs; nothing to say to losing a customer over the problem the company created for themselves.

You can have it; I'll take the printed book. Has been the best way since man discovered the written word and still is. Honestly, I think as we get older, the printed page becomes more important to us; I think it has a lot to do with our eyes.

Other guide book authors I've found good (for various camera brands and models) are David Busch, Charlotte Lowrie and Michael Guncheon.

The least helpful guide I bought was a "Dummies" series... but it was the only thing available in printed version, for a particular camera model. Also not a fan of eBooks and don't own a tablet yet.

You must be still using a "pinhole camera" with glass plate for image capture also!

I know that I am an old fart. That said- Ifind that there is something still magical abouy holding a book rather than a gizmo of one kind or another. I don't have a smart phone or tablet. I have never found the need to own one. We have all seen people buried in their I-phones at restaurants. Kids sitting next to each other while on their gagets. Actually writing a LETTER, never occurs to them. I prefer BOOKs-remember them!! I feel better now.

Don't get me wrong when I speak of using a digital device for viewing a particular ebook. Sometimes that's all that is available. I am a hardcover book lover. I have a library of over 4000 books. Yes, I too would rather turn the pages of a book rather than use an iPad. But I realize that we are in the digital age and I must sacrifice at times to get the best information that I require. To me it is amazing that individuals can move from film cameras to digital cameras so easily and then get all bent out of shape in having to read a book on a digital device.

I like being able to use Ctrl-F to find what I want immediately, rather than paging through a book. Too bad Thom has nothing for the D750, but David Busch's book is very good.
