Good settings for sunset pictures

Hello everyone.

I guess I am looking for just general settings and which mode I should use for sunset pictures.

I am leaving for bermuda on a cruise today and would like to be able to take some nice sunset and sunrise photos.

I have a canon T3 with 18-55 and also a 55-250. If you could give me general manual settings I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Robert there really isn't a set of numbers I can give you. What I can tell you is that you will need to bracket your photos. First, take a reading of the sunset. Lets say F8 @ 1/60 sec. I would take one photo at the setting and one at F5.6 and another at F11. There are many other variables to take into consideration. I have attache a URL that has helped me take many great sunset photos. One especially important item, is put something in the foreground.

Charlie1 is right, when you meter the sunset don't meter the sun itself, meter the sky to one side of the sun to start. I usually end up underexposing my shots by -1 or -2 f stops. Also, normally I will put the sun off to one side of the shot and not dead center.

There are two ways to go about shooting a sunset:

1.) Silhouette (as was outlined above)

2.) Bring the exposure of the sky down to match the landscape so you can take a "normal" looking shot.

For #2 you need a graduated Neutral Density filter. A square one that you hold in front of the lens or a screw on type; either way they do the same thing.

If you want to do #1, then put your camera's meter on "spot metering" mode and shoot to the left or right of the sun and make a silhouette.

Good morning Robert.

I just posted some of my shots on UHH from my Arizona & Utah trip. There are two sunrise shots there. If that's what you're after, let me know and I'll tell you how I did it. If you can't find it, go to Smugmug.com and type in robeng, then go to the galley section.

On May 11 there was a topic discussed at length about the use of SCENE settings especially concerning sunsets titled "A topic I have'nt scene here before". Some of it may be of value to you especially the suggestion of a youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRcaEW4ar3o

Have fun, like there's a chance you won't.
