Hi. I've read about this before here, but like many, it took me a long time to actually call my insurance company and inquire about getting my camera gear protected through my home policy. I called them up, spent about 10 minutes giving them serial numbers for all my lenses and camera and tripod. Just to give an idea of cost, I have a Nikon d7100, a 70-300vr, an 18-140, and 4 other older lenses such as a 50mm 1.8, 55mm 3.5, etc...Anyway, cost to me is $33 per year. I think this is a great deal. This covers everything from theft to dropping my camera in the pool, or whatever crazy accidents may happen. So, if you're interested in this type of insurance, this is a reminder to call and set it up. It's really quite easy and painless.
my insurance included mine when I had a mishap. Not only did it pay for a new camera but it paid for an upgrade and my old one was hard to get.Maybe having an insurance agent for a wife helped out a little.(wink wink)

Best call you ever made. Don't know who your insurance is through but, we've had USAA for over 40 years. We included my wife's jewelry and my camera gear. It still costs less than $100.00/year for peace of mind.

Did your homeowner's policy specifically exclude camera equipment before your call?

Our renter's policy only covered damage or theft at home not while it was in transit to be repaired. If you read my post about being screwed over on camera repair (
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-399528-1.html), that's why I got USAA VPP coverage on my camera gear.

Does it cover replacement cost or do you have to provide receipts, which means that they will offer replacement value - after 5 yrs ownership the value is negligible. Replacement cost has higher premiums. What is your deductible?

USAA has schizophrenia on camera gear. If you have a lot and it is high dollar gear, they will make you take out a high value floater that is certainly not low coast. It is however, cheap if the gear goes away. In the end, you must query your insurance company for particulars and make sure the contract reflects the conversation with the agent.
No deductible (I believe). Not sure about how theyes would compensate the true value. Going to Vegas and am taking the camera so I have piece of mind.
They sent me the papers on it, I'll read it and see what it says.
I have a floater on my home insurance but it is not cheap covers loss and breakage if unrepairable will be changing to a pro camera insurance that covers everything including breakage
I've been using the popular firm of Hope and Lucky. So far, so good. Some members have said that their home insurance premiums went up after filing a camera claim.

We've had VPP with USAA for a number of years since my wife inherited some antique jewelry when we were still on active duty. I added my camera gear after the incident with a camera repair shop. I now have over $5000.00 in gear insured and it's still less than $100.00/year. The 1st gear I added, they asked me to email them copies of the receipts. Now I call & give them the make, model, & serial number. When I damaged my camera last month in Pittsburgh, they said get it repaired & email us the bill. I had the check in 2 days. There's no deductible & if it's lost/stolen, I get what I paid for it.

My home owners insurance covers my camera's without an extra premium. However, I have a disc with photo's of all of my equipment and one that shows the serial number of each piece. Also, I have a detailed list of all equipment, and sales receipts for all equipment. My insurance agent has a copy of the equipment list in his office.
