Epson R1800 Pictures too Light & lacking sharpness

I own an Epson R1800. The printer is about 7 years old. When not in use i always turn the power off. My problem is my prints are too light & just blah looking. I even darkened the light setting. I cleaned the heads via the printers maintenance feature. I ran out of black ink so i cannot test till get a refill.
Has anyone cleaned the nozzles manually or induce an ink cartridge 50/50 with alcohol to clean the nozzles?? Any ideas would be appreciated. Bill

Youtube has videos that show you how to clean the Epson printer heads.

I replaced all the old ink cartridges & did a nozzle clean mode. Condition fixed.

Glad to see that you're up and running again. Let me offer up a few suggestions that might keep you out of trouble in the future. Unless you like buying ink. Do head cleanings only as a last resort. Three or four cleanings will empty those small cartridges. The following can be done with plain paper.
If the printer is setting mostly idle, do a nozzle check ever week and see if the pattern shows problems.
If you find some, make a small print from the file below and do another nozzle check.
If you still have a problem try another small print and check.
If there's still a problem with the patterns try this. Go to the windows paint program and with the paint bucket, color a page with a similar color to the one that shows problems. Now use the crop tool to make the page smaller. (This is all about saving ink) Now print the page and do another check.
This method usually fixes the problem and doesn't waste the other inks like a head cleaning does.
You can download a larger test image file here. I use it as a monitor test and a print reference.
