500mm problems

Purchased a used Sony 8/500mm reflex Lens from B&H Photo last week and this was the first time I put the Lens on my Sony a77M2 Camera. The problem started after the Lens was mounted on the came rdea. I received an error message saying Check to see if the Lens is mounted, This Camera does not support this Lens. Cleaned contacts and error message still appears. When into menu and turn off the Lens setting and problem still their.

All my other Sony Lens work well. Could I have purchased a bad Lens and is this a common problem with this lens? Does Sony still Service this Lens and would they have parts to correct this problem?

I have used that lens on both the a900 and a850, but they are both full frame cameras, it may have something to do with the reflex's center mirror not allowing enough light through to AF, but that's just a guess. I have also used it on a full frame A7R with an adaptor successfully.
I would try it on a different body before returning it, if you can.

The 500mm lens you have should work with any A-mount Sony camera. The A7r2 is a full frame E-mount mirrorless. The a77II is an A-mount crop sensor, but not a DSLR, but rather a DSLT. A-mount lenses should work on each type of the above except the E-mount a7r2. Naturally you need an adapter for the E-mount camera. Perhaps that particular lens is not compatible with the Sony DSLT type camera. Sony does not make DSLRs anymore, and the 500mm f/8 reflex lens. Check your lens on a DSLR Sony body crop sensor and see if it works.

The Lens is a SAL500F80 Lens for Sony in the mid 2000's and Sony quite making then around 5 years ago and was told not sure if parts are still available. They have me the name of Precision Camera that does their repairs. Will contact them and see what happens.

I am using that lens on the Sony A7rII and previously used it on the A7r with the Sony LAEA4 adapter the LAEA3 will not give autofocus with this lens.

It works fine for me, but I compared shots taken with the 70-400 mm A mount lens cropped to the same image as taken with the 500mm and find the 70-400 is SLIGHTLY better. Better booked for sure, slightly better contrast too. For a light, small birding lens I like the 500 mm a lot and am keeping it after getting the 70-400.

Purchased a used Sony 8/500mm reflex Lens from B&a... (show quote)

Bought mine last month from E-Bay. Works fine on my SonyA77II. It will only focus on the center spot, cannot change focus options with this lens. Otherwise no problems. Call B&H, they have GREAT customer service, if you are not happy, return it and get your new one from E-Bay. Also, I use app priority setting (try it).

I also find it will only focus on the center spot, but I just love this lens for birding! So compact and light with great IQ. Definitely a keeper if you get a good used one!
