nikon 5100 vs 7000, which would you buy

I have the opportunity to acquire either. It will be Nikon, because I have a number of lenses for Nikon only. Positives, negatives?

The D7000 because it's a higher-end model than the D5100; it has the AF motor in the body, better AF sensor system, faster burst mode. You can comare them at http://www.nikonus.com

I was recently in your position. I really like the D7000 because it's more durable, but I really REALLY like the articulated LCD screen on the D5100. I decided on the D5100 because 1) It has the same Sony sensor as the D7000, 2) I'm no longer professional and can treat my camera with more kindness than I could before.
I'm happy with my D5100 and my decision.

I bought the D5100 because it has the same sensor (takes the same pictures), cost 50% less, is lighter, and has a fully articulated screen.
I've had it about eight months now and love it. I far underestimated how useful the articulated screen is. Those who haven't had one probably aren't your best source of information on that.

If price isn't a problem, go with the D7000. You'll get an internal focus motor (more inexpensive glass), lens micro focus adjustment and a better body build. But there's more, if you order in the next 20 minutes...

Price was not the problem, it was weight and size! So I have the 5100. Bought the 18-200 lens (cost more than the body!) but have been well satisfied. Also like the articulated LCD.

Good point about ergonomics. I just assumed mlkddk had handled both models. If you haven't you should.

D-7000. I have had mine over a year, it is no comparison to a 5100. I use my 7000 almost very day and the picture quality is fantastic. *****

So how do you determine the picture quality of the D5100 does not compare to the D7000 when the use exactly the same sensor?

I have the same question.
My daughter-in-law bought a D3100 the same time I bought my D5100. Even though that sensor is not as many megapixels and doesn't have the same noise characteristics as the sensor in the D5100/7000 she takes great pictures with it as well.
We actually get far more people on UHH that have focusing problems with the D7000 than we do with the other two above. I don't know if it is the somewhat more detailed auto focus system (more dots) or just that more people buy the more expensive camera hoping it will take better pics for them; sort of more money than skill?
