Nikon D750 in 5:4 crop mode ??

On pg. 208 of his great book on the D750, David Busch suggests that 5:4 crop (4x5, 8x10 etc.) is as available as is DX crop.
On the following page in Fig.7.4, the crop modes are illustrated together with full frame; the crop modes being 1.5 DX, 1.2 and 5:4. Can someone please enlighten me on this? Maybe a firmware update? I would have use for 5:4 if I could get it ---in the camera.

If those modes don't appear to be available on your D750:
- find out whether a firmware update is available
- contact Nikon re support for your camera
- contact David Busch directly (see contact info on Amazon)

Good luck! /Ralph

From the menu with the camera logo, scroll down till you get to Image Area, right arrow to Choose Image area, right arrow again. You will get to a screen with FX, 1.2x (30x20) and DX (24x16). That is all she wrote, at least on My D 750. Good luck!

What does the Nikon owner's manual say? I'd look there before checking for a solution to a problem that may not exist.

My only issue is 5:4 crop. Have never seen it on any DSLR. Will contact Busch and report back.

There is no 5:4 crop on your camera.

You are probably better off shooting a slightly looser composition and cropping afterwards. This way you have the final choice on exactly what you want for your image when you are not in the middle of shooting. While it may not be an advantage/disadvantage for still subjects when you have the time to compose, it will save you from missing shots with active subjects. It is very easy to apply a 5:4 crop in post, not easy at all to fix an image where the main part of your subject is too close to an edge, etc.

I have found a couple misprints in his books and let him know via email, he being very appreciative said he'll correct prior to next printing. I think cause many of his books which I have a few, have identical info regarding certain things with minor changes from book to book and camera model obviously, perhaps a missed edit. My 750 doesn't have. There was a firmware update which I have that and still no 5:4. So I think the info was for another camera/book and was missed during editing.

You can check the nikonusa.com site for software updates. I don't think you'll find a 5:4 option. Take a normal photograph and crop to that ratio.

David Busch has responded that there is no 5:4 crop in the D750. That particular guide has been taken out of production and corrections cannot be made at this time. Anyone wishing to see his full response: send me your email address and I'll forward it.
Thank you to all who have responded to my post. Bob

Thanks Pilot for the update! I wouldn't think about setting the camera for different format. Actually I would rather have the viewfinder mark for those formats but not actually shooting cropped image.

The Nikon D800 has 5:4 "crop" mode. When turned on from the menu, you get 2 thin, black vertical lines which show the left and right edges of the 5:4 image area. The image beyond the lines which comprise the FX area is still visible. The D3 goes one step better: the image area outside the 5:4 crop lines becomes a soft, dark translucent grey.

D800 has 8x10 plus four more image areas. One of them is stealthy: doesn't appear on image area selections. You get it when shooting stills in live view: 16:9.

The middle ones can be useful when using a DX lens. They give many more pixels than DX area and can work with minimal vignetting over wider zoom range depending on lens.

D750 might have same. Get the free Nikon manual viewer and search on "image area".

I have my function button set to bring it up.

Or you can set the D8xx to gray out the unused area also.

Yes, likely modified the D800 book and missed this.

I communicated with him earlier on similar mistakes in the D5100 manual. He responded quickly and promised correction but evidently has ongoing quality assurance issue.
