Which Leica lenses would you put on the Sony and why? Choices are- 28mm f2.0, 50mm f2.0, and 90mm f2.0. I know, "It depends...", but let's toss the subject around and see what we come up with. Are some lenses better suited for one or the other? I usually have the 50mm on my Leica with the 28 in the bag as a back up. The 90mm comes out when I have a specific reason to use it. I am looking for suggestions and the reasoning behind the suggestions. I am an eclectic photographer - I shoot all kinds of subjects. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience and opinion!

My choice would be the 50mm, I shoot much like you do, except I don't much like the 28mm on a full frame except shooting wide landscapes, to much distortions for my likings, I use a 35mm.

I almost bought a Leica 50mm but went with the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Carl Zeiss instead for two reasons 1. no adapter will be needed. 2. the price.

Interesting that you would want to put a Leica lenses on anything but a Leica. Understandable that the lenses is great. Never owned a Leica but know of it's reputation. It can't do what a Sony can do I suppose????

Why in Hog's name are you putting Leica lenses on your Sony when you actually own a late-model Leica? No reason not to, I guess, but, speaking of reason, why? Sony, Zeiss, Sigma, Tamron etc. lenses are available for your Sony camera. Did you buy only the A7RII body?

You have to buy an adapter and one adapter is good for all the lenses so why pick only one?

Just forgoing the question why: I would put the 90 on, simply because I like getting in close. Just ask my wife. LOL

I'll try to reply to several of your comments. I am not planning to choose either / or, but plan to use both bodies. I will never give up on Leica lenses on Leica bodies - they were made for each other for sure! But, I have several Leica lenses and see no sense in just keeping all but one on my main camera. Since I already have other Leica lenses, and want to see the how the Sony A7RII would work as a backup, I planned to use the lenses I already have invested in. Now the issue is which lens would be best on which camera body...

I have the same logic with my sig P220, i only have handguns that shoot 45cal. so I only have to buy one type of ammo.

I have lens from my Canon film camera that would fit on my Canon digital camera with an adapter but was told by a photo store rep that while they will fit they will not produce clear pictures so I did not buy the adapter. Something to think about anyway.

I have tried a number of Leica lenses on my Sony A7r and sold all of them for Zeiss glass. I know the Leica lenses are as good or better than the Zeiss, but I found the Zeiss gave better results on the Sony. Perhaps its that Zeiss and Sony collaborate on some lenses? The Zeiss ZM lenses with adapters are great, as are the Sony/Zeiss lenses if you want auto focus. The me Loxia and Batis lenses are also excellent. For me the Leica lenses gave vignetting and color fringing on the wide angles, and the 90mm was a bear to focus!

I wouldn't bother with Leica lenses on a Sony body. The 2 lenses in question are available from Sony, therefore no adapter needed which would degrade image quality. Why would you put a lense that requires an adapter on a $3198 body just to get a reduced quality photo?

Is your Leica a full=frame digital model? I would put the 28 on the Sony if it is, since the resolution of the camera will allow significant cropping if you want to do that to an image. I found the Leica 90mm difficult to focus on the A7 but I was using a slower lens, an f4? So that may have accounted for the issues.

zeiss makes some excellent manual focus lenses in sony mounts.
i've no trouble with the 50mm summilux or my 35mm asph summicron. i do not like the performance of the 28mm elmarit. for that focal length i chose the 28mm m mount minolta rokkor. find one without separation and you will appreciate its performance.

i am not a big fan of adapting leitz/leica rangefinder lenses onto any other camera. the only exception is the ltm to m mount adapter for use on my IIIf body.

Not the wide angle. I tried my 21mm with bad results. Researching it I learned the manual focus rangefinder lenses that are wide give terrible CA. Your 28 may squeak by but I will tell you my 90 has given me great results. Better than on the M 240.
