Here are some quotes that I ran across this afternoon:

Age was once young
Youth was never old.

Some scientists may at last disperse
The mysteries of the universe.
But me, I cannot think
Why pork is white and ham is pink.

Home is Heaven,
And Orgies are vile.
But... I like an orgy
Once in a while.

A very strange bird is the Pelican;
His beak can hold more than his Belly can.

My very favorite of his:

I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one,
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I’d rather see than be one!

He was a funny, clever guy. I have (or had) a funny little book he wrote.

The pelican poem, though often attributed to Ogden Nash, was written by Dixon Lanier Merritt (American Poet, 1879-1972) in 1910.

Long ago I was surprised to find this rather serious piece by Nash, who is best known for doggerel and wordplay in the service of humor.

Listen…
There is a knocking in the skull,
An endless silent shout
Of something beating on a wall,
And crying, “Let me out!”

That solitary prisoner
Will never hear reply.
No comrade in eternity
Can hear the frantic cry.

No heart can share the terror
That haunts his monstrous dark.
The light that filters through the chinks
No other eye can mark.

When flesh is linked with eager flesh,
And words run warm and full,
I think that he is loneliest then,
The captive in the skull.

Caught in a mesh of living veins,
In cell of padded bone,
He loneliest is when he pretends
That he is not alone.

We’d free the incarcerate race of man
That such a doom endures
Could only you unlock my skull,
Or I creep into yours.
Ogden Nash

Purple Cow

by Gelett Burgess
Published in The Lark, 1895

I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"--
I'm sorry, now, I wrote it!
But I can tell you anyhow,
I'll kill you if you quote it!

I loved his quickies (I do love quickies!)

“If called by a panther
Don’t anther.”

&

“Candy is dandy,
But liquor is quicker”

I sure do.

The sacred ape now children see.
Is searching for the modest flea.
If he should turn around you'll find.
He has no hair on his behind.

Like me, he was a Baltimore Colts fan and Life or Look once did a cover story of his poems and pictures of Colts players. One I remembered was: "When hearing tales of Bubba Smith,
You wonder is he man or myth."

Ogden Nash is front and center at a dinner that we attend every September in a little resturant on Ocracoke Island NC. there is a group of us from all over the East that are there at the same time. We have gotten know each other and at our annual dinner Mark C. will recite something from Ogden Nash to begin the festivities. Cheers, Ogden.

Ironically, Graham Nash will be appearing at the Vertex Festival in Buena Vista, Colorado on August 6th.

Too bad I can't go because:

1) Never was a huge fan of C,S,N & Y
2) I'm too busy, and most importantly
3) The locals mangle the name of their own town by pronouncing it 'Byoona
Vista'.

Do they not know that a large section of Colorado used to be Mexico once?
