Below are two speedlites and I would like to purchase one of them. I don't want to spend much money but I do want to learn to use one even if it means I will have to graduate to a better model later. I would like to use the speedlite on and off camera. I don't know much about speedlites and photography is something that I am growing into. I have been asked to shoot a friends daughter's wedding in September. I will be using a Nikon 5200. The wedding will be held on the beach. Thank you so much for all of your friendly advice ahead of time.

I would suggest the Yongnuo 685 for Nikon Cameras. A previous popular Yongnuo for Nikon was the 568EX . I think the 560 series is manual only. Check B&H for availability. Good luck.

Could be wrong but these are the same speedlight.

It is a manual speed light I think usually used off camera and radio triggered although it can be an optical trigger. It will not adjust automatically which isn't too bad in a controlled situation but you would want to try test shots to nail the exposure. Would a wedding photographer use a manual flash? There is a wedding section it may be better to post your question there.

This maybe better for you

Yongnuo YN685 Wireless TTL Speedlite and Wireless Flash Controller Kit for Nikon Cameras B&H # YOYN685NCK (B&H Kit) I think this is what I was looking for. Thank you for your help.

Do you know of anywhere I could get a good used 5200 as a second camera for a really reasonable price?

The more light the better the exposure. Canon 580EX is very powerful. For inside shooting a flash is needed, with lots of power as you will be "bouncing" the light and that cuts the intensity in half. You need to shop for the most power for the buck.

Canon 580Ex has a guide number of 58 (meters) the yongnou has a guide number of 191 (feet)from B&H or about 60 Meters
It's unlikely in the real world that the yongnou would reach its rated guide value but it's probably fair to say they are around the same power.

I use the Yongnou 568 EX on my 5200 and my d810 works great for me, about $100.00 when I bought it.

I didn't know you could use a Canon flash on a Nikon either. Thank you for taking the time to share with me. It is very helpful to read your opinions.

Good luck with that. Many people lose friends in this paramount event with inexperience.

Erm yes or no, the 580 Ex was given as a good example of a powerful flash and the yongnou is of similar strength. Pins and protocols differ so the 580ex would work as a manual flash on a nikon with no ttl. just the central pin is the same. for manual mode i know the yongnou triggers are transceivers and can work with the wrong feet in manual e.g if you have a nikon yongnou transceiver on a nikon and a canon version on the remote flash it works in manual, same flash unit canon body swop the transceiver round and it works.

I have a pair of rf603n transceivers which work with pentax (wrong remote shutter release cable the canon version is needed) I modified one of them to work with a panasonic g5 m43 camera uses a different pin to canon so I have 2 transceivers working with 3 brands of camera and if i bought a third canon version i'd be able to work in manual with 4. The centre pin is the fire pin but the wakeup pin varies between brands. And then there is Sony...

Why not a 7100? http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-400154-1.html It's a whole lot of camera for the money.

One is a speedlight, the other is a controller, which you attach to your camera's hot shoe, and use it to control other flashes.

Steff,

I think you might want to get a flash with TTL capabilities. You'll have your hands full moving around and getting good shots, as it is. Messing around with manual flash adjustment will just be another variable for you to deal with. I'll bet that Yongnuo makes one for Nikon. I have a Yongnuo ring flash that is TTL capable with my Canon. Relatively inexpensive and good reputation for quality.

Here is a link to the aforementioned 685: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1247484-REG/yongnuo_yn685_n_yn685_wireless_ttl_speedlite.html.

For just a little more dough you'll make your life a lot easier.
