Look both ways

Yesterday, about two miles from my house, a 75 year old man was killed in a car accident. A large dump truck ran a red light at about 45 mph but the old man pulled out into the road and got t-boned on the driver's side. He was wearing a seat belt but they can only do so much. My point is, please everyone, look both ways before pulling out onto any road. Don't just assume, because you have a green light, that no one is coming.

Most accidents can be avoided if you drive defensively.

Thanks for the concern. I always do.

We've had semis not even slow down for a light that has already turned green at our apartment complex traffic light. There have been 2 fatal accidents in the 3 years we've lived here so, if we see a semi approaching the light, we make sure it's going to stop before we proceed. In both cases the driver was convicted.

That's what you have to do to prevent becoming "dead right".

When I'm at a red light I don't hurry to go. Wife always tells me the lights green. I've seen to many people run red lights.

In the cemetery, there are many gravestones inscribed, "I had the right of way." RIP

Right you are! I always look when the light turns green, but I seldom check for traffic running the light.

I recently finished a money-saving 6-hour online safety course given through my insurance company. In NY, there are no laws concerning right of way. However, drivers must yield right of way. Confusing? Definitely. Generally, the car on your right at a 4-way intersection has the right of way, but it's not a law, so a collision would be blamed on the car doing the hitting. So right of way is a courtesy more than a law.

Two weeks ago wife was hit by someone running a red light. She was just bruised up but the car suffered $21,000+ in damages. Only redeeming factor is that the other driver admitted to the police and his insurance company that he ran the light. Just goes to prove that there are some honest but careless people running around out there. Stay safe. Look before you leap.

I was once hit while I was making an exit from a highway. The other car returned. amazing! It was at night, so there was no way of knowing who hit me. His insurance paid to have my car repaired.

Some advice: get a dashcam. They're cheap and effective - good insurance.

Can anyone recommend a good one at a reasonable price?

Today the red light is just a suggestion to stop for many drivers.

I think this is the one I have. They're all very similar. A higher price might get you more features, but you don't necessarily need them. I couldn't get the right angle by using the suction cup on the windshield, so I have it on the dash with a generic mount. This makes the video upside down, but it can be edited to the upright orientation. They're very popular in Russia because of all the scams involving phony traffic accidents.
