I've been looking at some cameras on line and I'm considering purchasing one (I know it's grey market); it offers Square Trade for about $60 for three year warranty plus accidents (price included). I never would have considered purchasing such a plan until I took a stumble and trashed my D3100 (it was not under warranty).

My question: Have any of your purchased and USED Square Trade? Is it as good as they claim in the advertisement on Ebay?

This post is for gathering information about the reliability of Square Trade. If you haven't used Square Trade, then please don't respond (that will open up a floodgate!). If you have an opinion of purchasing grey market, please start your own topic about that (which will open another floodgate!).

Thank you for sharing your experiences with Square Trade and helping me make an informed decision (about Square Trade).

Yes, I bought a Square Trade warranty on a Blu-ray player I bought on ebay. I stopped working not long after I got it, Square Trade refunded my money, but not shipping costs, they didn't want to repair it. I got to keep the player and I threw it in the garbage.

Square Trade is awesome. They repaired my flash on my Canon 60D twice and also inspected and cleaned it. The 2nd time, the whole top of the camera was replaced. I saved a lot of money on that deal. Wish my policy was still in effect, but I got more than my money's worth! Camera is still working just fine a year after the last repair.

I had the same experience with square trade. I had a DVR which I bought the plan on and the hard drive went bad. I called square trade and they wouldn't repair it but refunded me the price I paid for it. I then bought a hard drive, installed it, and it is still working fine today. I put the savings towards another purchase. I more than made out on that deal. I even told them I suspected what the problem was but they said the plan replaces your purchase price if they don't repair, it so they had no problem sending me the check n ad was OK with it. Couldn't ask for better than that. One caution though, that was several years ago; could be changed by now.

I had it on my D7000. When I had a problem, they offered to send me a box, immediately emailed me a shipping label and quickly repaired and sent my camera back.

I also had their warranty on a big lens that enhanced my sale with a no cost transfer for the buyer to use forth remainder of the contract.

Thank you for all of your replies! I will purchase my new camera and get the Square Trade warranty! It seems like a small amount to pay for the service they offer.

It proved that they don't need to repair anything they warranty. The chance for them to fail are so slim that ocasionally refund would still make them a lot of profit.

Many modern electronics boxes (like DVR's) are made to be throw away. They actually cost more to repair than replace.

Keep in mind (I may be wrong here, going from memory) but I believe that the square trade warranty does not kick in until after the manufacturers expires, so if you buy a grey market product and it needs warranty service while under the manufacturer warranty, the square trade warranty will not help you. The square trade warranty may only kick in after the manufacturers warranty expires. And if the manufacturer warranty is for 2 years and you buy three years of square trade, you may only get one year with square trade. Check on that before you buy so you understand the red tape.

I had their extended policy on an HP printer, it failed after 4 years and they paid off after I shipped it to them for "repairs" I don't think they even tried to repair it they only had it a day. Probably stripped it for parts or got it repaired in Mexico and then sold it as used on Ebay.

I purchased a D7100, GREY, After I initiated the purchase I then found out it was GREY. I then saw the ST insurance on the item. I caled ST and they said they cover it. But these were just words, no Puddin yet. Used it, was great. At Disney with the whole family gravity hooked the camera and down it went. Broke. Sent it to ST, they repaired it faster than Nikon repaired my D800 and f24-70. Got it back and it has been fine.

Yes I have had Square Trade on all of my Nikon Bodies. It is good insurance and it starts in at the end of Nikon's warranty or covers the stuff Nikon doesn't. It also is (or seems to me) decently priced and they replaced a high end Nikon Point and Shoot that I purchased for my wife. We had the camera 4 months and she dropped a mug of hot coffee on the camera which shattered the mug, destroyed the LED screen and filled the camera body with hot coffee. I called Square Trade, they had me send in the remains of the camera and accessories that were in the box then sent me a check for the invoice price of the camera. I used the money to buy a new one. I did have to pay for the new Square Trade on the replacement camera.

Insurers make money out of customers. I've never in 43 years as an adult been better off for being insured. Therefore I only insure when I legally have to (motor, professional indemnity,) or where if I got it wrong, I could lose a life changing amount of money (so upgrade on the motor insurance in case I rear-end a Ferrari, house buildings and contents insurance.) The only exception is where I can add an item for little or no extra premium, such as photographic kit on house insurance.
Good luck, but the odds are in favour of Square Trade...
