I went to my local habour yesterday (it happened to the hottest day of the year so far 34C or 94F so conditions weren't ideal for this test)
The reason for this was to test and compare my three lenses of an identical shot.
I am an M43 user and the lenses are a Panasonic 20mm prime, a Panasonic 25mm prime and a Panasonic 1445 mm zoom.
I took 4 shots:
1: 20 mm with the prime.
2: 20 mm with the zoom.
3: 25 mm with the prime.
4: 25 mm with the zoom.

I will attach the 4 shots for members to examine for image quality, sharpness etc. I am not too concerned about composition it is thelens quality I am interested in.

Far from being an expert, but, my likes , even downloading and zooming in, the 20mm zoom is my choice at I find the 20 prime just too dark. The 25mm prime and zoom, just can't see any difference. Just can't see a difference in sharpness, even zooming in.

Your post shows why zoom lenses are so popular - excellent quality with infinite focal lengths.

They all look perfectly sharp. The first one (darker) seems to have underexposed slightly. Not sure it's the lens, however.

in both cases, the primes win by a good margin

I downloaded both, cropped them to JUST the white boat and zoomed in 200% and really, the difference was minor; not anything I'd be excited about.

i think the difference i see is due to contrast

Thanks for your comment it was very interesting, my reason for my post was the the 20mm prime is very small and the camera will slip easily into my pocket, so it makes a very good travel lens
The other lenses are more than twice the size so therefore not pocketable so if you think the image quality is broadly the same with all three lenses I shall probably use the 20mm lens most of the time.

Assuming the focus point was consistent in all four pictures, I think the primes are slightly sharper on the edges and the buildings in the background have a slight edge. The difference is very slight.

I just purchased the Nikon 70-200 Lens and it is on the way to my home with UPS from Philadelphia as we speak.
Until seeing your comparison pics I had some reservations. Now I am convinced I did the right thing.
Thanks for sharing.

I think you should not have labeled which was done with what lens. I don't know if anyone would know which was the primes and which was the zoom. IMHO there is very little to choose here.

They all seem rather Dark, was your exposure settings correct? This is just my personal opinion from viewing your 4 images. I am sure Other more professional and experienced Photographers on this site will provide their viewpoints and opinions.

As far as sharpness goes, they are all about equal John.
