I am from the film era. I recently migrated to digital.

I am fortunate enough to have a tripod from the film
days. Quick, easy, stable. It is better than any new
tripods I have found, even, the expensive ones.

"Quick, easy, stable..."

How much does it weigh? As some of us get older, we are willing to forgo some of the characteristics you mentioned for less weight. I have a Feisol carbon fiber that is quick, easy, stable and light.

I have a Canon MK II and three lenses, respectively,EF 180 mm f/3.6L Macro USM,EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM, and EF 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. I am looking for a ball head or any head which would support my equipment and is easy to use. Does anyone have used Arca-Swiss ball head? Have any thought on Arca-Swiss ball head? Thank you. My Manfrotto will meet all those requirements, although not as light as carbon fiber.

I don't know anything about arca-swiss though, singed --- SO-HI-Ooo.

I hate to disillusion you, but many modern tripods (and heads) are better than those of yore. I bought my first tripod over 40 years ago; my wife is the acknowledged tripod expert on Shutterbug magazine; and between use we own 15-20 tripods. You might care to take a look at http://www.rogerandfrances.com/taster/Tripods%20Taster.pdf .

Cheers,

Hey!, I have a Ritz_Digi Pro_100 wobbler-pod also. But at times it serves its purpose, being small enough, and light enough collapsed, to carry in a small daypack. :)

But do not!, trust it in any wind.

Roger,
thanks for the link....

Unfortunately...this is me at the moment:

Quite often, buying your second tripod is another, similar rite of passage. It marks your transition from Someone Who Believed The Advertisements, and bought mostly on price, to A Sadder, Wiser but More Realistic Photographer.

Excellent article.
I find the same with tripods as with all other tools - the right tool for the job makes achieving the desired result faster and usually easier than when trying to adapt a substitute. When doing macro I use a heavier 'pod and a geared head; when walking around I use a light 'pod with a ball-head. When working on developing my skill at panoramas I use a leveling center column.

Wow, you have 4 lenses there that I would be willing to kill for. I would give you my wife for the 24~105L and I would even lend you my dog for your 'DO' lens...... good luck with your ball head.

I HAVE A REALLY-RITE-STUFF MEDIUM BALL HEAD WHICH ACCOMODATES MY D3 AND NIKON 80-400 NICELY.

I own two aluminum Gitzo tripods, both over 20 years old. These are very, and I mean very solid tripods. One is a 400 series and the other is a 300 series. Yes they are heavier then the new carbon fiber tripods but there both considerably stronger then the carbon fiber tripods made today. The least expensive carbon fiber tripod that is anywhere comparable with what I have now would cost well over a thousand dollars and the only thing that it would give me is a little lighter in weight. Personally I cant see spending the money for the carbon fiber tripods, very over priced and most are very wobbly. I see so many people boasting about there one hundred dollar tripods and quick release heads and pistol grips and I wonder how one can spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses and not want to put the money into a good tripod to support there equipment. I will never understand this. A good tripod is a one time investment and it should be a good one. I also use a Calumet CB5 ball head, I have two of these and I have had meny good years with these heads. Unfortunately Calumet does not make these heads any more but they are good heads.

Thank you, all. I have a Manfrotto ball head and a 3-way head. They cannot support the weight of my camera with 180 mm macro lens. I need something which could support the heavy equipment.

Thank you again.
