If the strap fails, it doesn't matter how many lugs you have.

sigh, from the earliest of times, ie, canon 1947 and nikon 1949, camera manufacturers have been inserting 2 lugs in their camera bodies, for good reasons. you are supposed, and the bodies are designed, to use both lugs. the only exceptions to this are the leica m5 and the leitz cl, leitz minolta cl and minolta cle. these offer 3 points of suspension, so you can hang the body horizontally or vertically.

i have always used both lugs on my nikon and leica film gear in very unfriendly circumstances - as in people trying to kill me - nothing personal, just the environment. i've never had a lug fail (they have loosened over the years, and i have had them reseated) nor a camera strap break on me. my straps are narrow nylon, great for any critical climate.

so that is my experience and the manufacturers' recommendations.

I find it useful to sometimes use my Optech camera sling around my neck attached to only one camera body lug (although it is designed for two). I especially do this when I know I will be shooting a lot of verticals (Balloons, Concerts, etc.) using up to medium telephotos. Then I don't have to worry about the other part of the strap interfering with my view finder at all.

My question is, How safe is this?

I've used a Sun Sniper sling style strap on my DSLR for about 8 years with no problem. It is attached to the tripod socket and has a shock absorber built into the strap to ease the sudden jolt if you drop your camera while wearing it (I'm fumble fingers!). I recently changed to a smaller mirrorless camera and use a Peak Design strap that can attach to both camera lugs or 1 lug and their QR plate. I like using the left lug and the QR plate because it frees the area around the right lug where all the buttons and dials are placed so close together on this small camera body (Sony A6300).

One camera part, the common lug seemingly heretofore taken for granted,...
