Which lens is expendable?

A few months ago I added a D750 to my D7100 and D3100. I love the FX format but I still occasionally carry the 7100 DX also. (Last weekend I attended a macro shoot and carried the 7100 with an 85mm f.3.5 Micro and the 750 with a 24-70 f 2.8).

With the D7100 I have the following lenses: 18-55mm f3.5-5.6, 55-300mm f4.5-5.6; Micro 85mm f3.5; 35mm f 1.8, Tokina f11-16mm f2.8.

With the D750 I have a 50mm f1.8; 28-80mm f3.3-5.6; 70-200mm f4; 24-70mm f2.8. (All of the lenses are Nikon except for the one Tokina.)

These lenses cover the spectrum which I enjoy shooting (certainly might like to add a 500mm in the future) but I wonder if there is too much duplication in my list. Are there some of the DX lenses which I could eliminate? What others would you add?

Thanks,
Bob

If you had to rid yourself of one, part with the slower 28-80mm. But why not keep it in storage so if you sell a body in the future you can add that lens to it.

For a beginner they want a system that can be used right now. No sense giving a good one away.

I have FF and DX cameras and lenses. Sometimes I throw everything in the back of the SUV and go. Other times I take just DX stuff if I'm going to be walking a lot. Other times I just go with FX. While my 35mm DX might mimic my 50mm FF, I don't consider it duplication. If you need to raise a little cash, get rid of the lens "YOU" use the least.

If you want to spend some serious cash, Nikon's 500mm F4.0 is a fantastic lens. If you want a very good lens that is easy to hand hold, easy on the budget, and at home on any of your bodies, the Nikon 200-500 fits the bill.

unless you have a swap out addiction, their are no expendable lenses. at some time or another you'll need or wish you had kept all those lenses.

No, I don't have a swap out addiction and I don't have any in the list that I don't use for some occasion. I was just concerned that I was missing something that should have been obvious to me.

GENorkus,
I can see why you would suggest removing the 28-80 f3.3-5.6. It is cheaply constructed, doesn't have a big hole in the end, and isn't in the same ballpark as the others. However, it is the only mid range zoom in my FX kit and it gives a remarkable image...much better than you would expect. I find it on my D750 frequently as a "walk-around".

Thanks all,
Bob

excellent reply - keep them all, you never know when you will need them.

What is it that you need the 28-80 to do that the 24-70 cannot do? You also have a 70-200 to cover the range from 70-80. If you can trade it for something else, or sell it, the 28-80 is the one I would part with.

Only mid range??? What do you consider the 24-70?

Sounds to me that you have a gas problem and don't want to admit it. In that case, to answer your later portion of the OP:

Add a double-bubble (ultra fisheye), a couple tilt shift lenses, maybe some astrotracking lenses and hardware (or just get a Pentax K1), then you could increase your wireless abilities with big flashes, maybe the latest camera bag, etc.

Sell the D3100 with the two DX kit lenses (18-55 and 55-300). Get a DX 18-140 for the D7100 and FX 70-300 for both.

I misspoke when I said the 28-80 was the ONLY mid range FX lens. I left out the critical word LIGHTWEIGHT in that sentence. When carrying the rig around all day for general shooting there is much to recommend the 28-80 over the 24-70.

As far as selling the 3100 and the kit lenses, I have looked into that but the amount offered for those hardly make packing them up worthwhile. I have decided to keep them and just find a young person who is enthusiastic about photography and give it to them.

As far as having a case of GAS, I admit to being no more immune to that than any others here.

Wow bettis1, you wanted to get some friendly advice and some replies wanted to hang you upside down. Many of them need to go back to bed and get up on the right side and start the day again. Maybe we need a forum for "Grumpy Old Men"! have a great day.

What you have to see is what lenses you use and how often you use them. If you use all of them, keep them. When I find that I have a lens sitting unused for a long time because I'm using other lenses, I put it on ebay. If I'm not using it, someone else can.

Thanks for the defense, A.I.R.

As an octogenarian I'm pretty familiar with "Grumpy Old Men" and I've worn that hair shirt myself in the past.

jerryc41,

You are right about the way to determine which lenses to rid myself of. But since the FX format is so new to me, it is getting most of the workout right now. Obviously, I need to postpone any decisions until I see just how much, or if, I begin to use the DX much again.

Best wishes with the addition of the full frame Nikon D750 camera to your arsenal of equipment. FYI, the Tokina 11-16MM F2.8 is also useable on your D750 at 14.5MM or longer focal length with minimal vignetting. Do a test; you may like the results. I have the Tokina 12-24MM F2.8 as well and it also covers full frame at 17MM or longer!

Using you list as a guide, and in consideration of the fact that you have BOTH DX and FX bodies, I see no real reason to sell anything at this time. My discipline is to sell what I haven't used in two years and I have been keeping up with that, reducing the clutter and turing it into something that I do use. I still have some lens overlap, but that is my plan. For example I have a 70-200/2.8 and a 70-200/4 as I will reach for the lighter one if I won't be needing the faster version. Happens as you get older! Best of luck with your gear.
