I have been using Photoshop CS 3 & 4 for awhile and am thinking of trying out some alternatives, if any no cost options. Users opinions welcomed.

I don't know about no cost options, but Affinity Photo is made for Macs and runs for about $50 and is available in the Ap Store. Also there is Macphun Creative Kit that goes for around $200.

Affinity Photo is an alternative to Photoshop and it is available for Mac but will available for Windows before the end of the year.

There's always the free Photos app that comes bundled with the Mac OS. It is pretty basic but it will do some things.

Affinity, Acorn and Pixelmatr are low cost alternatives.

Lightroom is pretty darned good all by itself, and as a standalone is very inexpensive. The NIK plugins can be added for a more robust set.

I really like the MacPhun suite, but have not used it as a standalone but as an extension for LR. I think it now works with Apple Photos as an extension too.

Yes, you are correct. That is how I use both Affinity and Macphun, as extensions to Photos.

Might not want to hear this, but I'll throw my vote for Lightroom CC. $ 10 bucks a months for the latest Lightroom and Photoshop is as unbelievable as the software is good.

I'd recommend you check out Light Zone. It's a fairly good editing program. Don't worry about having to submit an email address to register to download the software. I've never heard from them.

Photos has gotten better with the updates in El Capitan. I still use CC Photoshop for serious PP though. I am considering giving Affinity a try because of the good words on UHH postings, eventually.

One thing to remember about Photos.app is it is extensible and some plug-ins are both useful and free.

Affinity photo and Macphun creativity are paid programs (not much though). GIMP is free. I had GIMP but wasn't comfortable with it, so I went to Affinity Photo and couldn't be happier, it has all the power of PS with only a one time price.
