I have a Canon digital camera with a number of lenses. I recently started to carry around my PowerShot S95 and find I can do quite a lot with it. For certain uses it sure beats carrying around a heavy camera with multiple lenses. Any one else have that experience?

Absolutely. I have a Canon Powershot SX120 IS which goes everywhere with me. I've got some good 'sneaky' photos of friends when we're out together, something I can't do with my Nikon (be sneaky that is.)

I purchased both the Canon S95 and the Panasonic Lumix LX5. Kept the LX5 and gave the S95 to my adult son. They both are amazing to do exactly what the OP is doing... carrying a light, discreet camera on occasions rather than the DSLR. Both have excellent manual controls.

Regardless how much you have spent for photo equipment, you need a decent P&S to carry in your pocket. Wallet, cell phone, P&S Canon or Sony. When I leave the house, they leave with me.

Oh Yeah! Just depends on what you want to do at the time. There will be times when that is all you want to do and not be weighed down, and although the S95 is great for that, it still will not give you the quality and latitude you have with your DSLR. For me anyway, when I want that shot that will end up in a frame on the wall, or I need a great telephoto shot, the DSLR is my go to. But, I carried my S95, and nothing else, on my last vacation and it is a terrific camera! Don't get me wrong! You can get great framed enlargements with that little guy too!!! But the big guy will give you better results.

Have experienced the same migration, from DSLR, to m4/3, to the Canin S90 and the IPhone. I'm not disappointed in any of them, although I've found that respective to my listing, I tend to have my iPhone ready all the time versus the more planned use of my big cameras. I've had good success printing 8x10 images without trouble with all, although the DSLRs are best for larger print sizes.

The S90 provides me with RAW files and great control; no disappointment at all. Certainly, the absence of a viewfinder can be a challenge outdoors!

I've had a Canon S90 for a couple of years, and recently got the S95. Absolutely amazing cameras! I never leave home without one in a belt holster. About the only way to tell shots from it and my D7000 or 7D are to look at file info. Since the depth-of-field is greater on point n shoot cameras, because of the smaller sensor, I sometimes actually prefer them for certain subjects. I ride a motorcycle most of the time and my little S90 is always with me.

Me too! It just seems there is a time an place for a particular camera. I guess we just need to have all of them!!!

S95: shoots raw files, weighs nothing, tack sharp, since the S100 came along reasonable.

I carried a Canon P&S for a 10-day backpacking trip at Philmont last summer. Would I have been able to get better quality photos with my DSLR? Yewbetcha! I opted to carry more water instead of the weight & bulk of a DSLR and the batteries it needed to keep it alive.

My Brother is a serious amateur photographer and has some really nice stuff like a Canon 1D Mark-4 and nothing but L lenses. He went to a Sugarland concert and was not allowed to bring the big stuff in so he carried his Canon G9. He ended up taking a shot with it that would easily make a cover for any magazine and is probably his best image.
