A while back someone posted a picture at a major sporting event where there was a section for Nikons and all the photographers had white lenses. The op asked why there was only Canon shooters in the Nikon section, turns out it was Nikon shooters with white lenses. Yes Nikon made white lenses
for professional sports and the are still being used. It is good to hear that you do not denigrate people, because I didn't want this to turn into a pissing contest. I like Nikon, but I have owned Minolta, Pentax, Fuji, and Canon, and all were very good cameras, I wish Minolta still made cameras.

I'm looking to upgrade my Canon 70D- I've been using it a lot over the last year for sports and find that is lacking in a few areas
So looking at 7dMKII and.... gasp Nikon D500
FEatures I'm looking for Higher FPS and better ISO
What I've found so far: If I want to take a picture under crappy high school lights and I need to shoot 10,000 ISO then Nikon will give me the cleaner shot?
Fast focusing- Sounds like both are better than what I have but Nikon may be better?
Dynamic Range? I get the difference but will I or parents who see the shots really care all that much? I know there will be the shots that will be impacted by DR
Ergonomics: Actually went into my local store and played with both side by side- have rented MKII before. From a feel perspective they are both pretty similar to me
I love the "Q" quick adjust screen on the canon- couldn't tell-forgot to look- on the Nikon if it had something similar so I would have to plow through a bunch of button/menus to change things?
Lastly- the investment- I have the canon camera, 70-200 2.8 Tamron, 17-55 2.8 canon and 600 flash- these last 2 purchased used
Is there anything else I'm missing technically? Will the "better" pictures(mediocre photo skills being the same lol) offset the nice convenient adjustment screen on the canon?
Nikon as brand new would potentially have a longer life vs MKII? when is MKIII lol?
Been reading reviews- Read Ken Rockwell today and he though MKII was best thing since sliced bread, sort of dismissive of D500
Yes I've looked at the comparative sites

Anything else I'm missing?
Good for me to type this- helps my analysis

This is very simple, if you want the best you get the D500 and the Nikon lenses that fit your needs. If you want to use your current lenses you get the Canon 7dm2. According to specs, reviews and tests the Nikon D500 is the best crop sensor camera available today for sports and fast moving objects in all situations. But the Canon is also good so it is not a bad choice to get that body.

Sony only acquired Konica Minolta for the lens mount, Sony is not manufacturing Minolta cameras.

SharpShooter, What actual advantage, did Canon gain over Nikon, through/by adopting, their new Lens Mount,
versus Nikon, retaining their same old, "F-mount," (now with electronic coupling?)

At that time, (perhaps, in 1987, when the EOS lenses came out), Canon came out with their new lens mount,
while Nikon just continued, with their same old, "F-mount" yet, Nikon, also used electronics, to facilitate the
electronic operation of the metering, diaphragm and auto-focus.

So, Canon, had their (Newly Designed, Lens Mount), (EOS), while Nikon, simply continued, with their same, F-mount.

How did "this", give Canon, a major advantage, and place Nikon, at a significant disadvantage, regarding future lens production?

Today, Nikon's F-mount, has the same full electronics, that Canon's EOS mount has...right?

(Nikon does, make f/1.2 lenses. You mistakenly said, that they don't. I don't know about f/1.0?)

And, yet, also? What the heck, would that, have anything, to do with, Nikon, still using, it's original, F-mount?

"That," holding them, (their engineering, or, production of lenses, back..?)

Will you please, explain these things, to me? I'm very curious to learn the answers to these things.

Thanks, Rob.

Rob, you don't want to be educated, and even if you did it's not my place to do so.
Maybe you can educate me?! Explain the process by which Nikon fell to #2 in the world behind Canon. When you know THAT you'll be educated.
Oh yea, almost forgot, it is all marketing. Somehow canon has smarter marketing monkeys than Nikon!!
And yea, that old antiquated design Nikon manual focus f1.2 lens, do you know anyone that's been fool enough to have ever bought one? Didn't think so, neither do I!!
Bet you didn't know that Nikon uses all the same lens test equipment that's manufactured and supplied by and used by DXO, did you?!?! Didn't think so.
There's a very respected and famous Nikon shooter named Thom Hogan. He used to be a professional scientific lens/camera tester and researcher, now he's just a Pro Nikon shooter. Google, "Thom Hogan Do you believe in DXO Mark".
Maybe someone a lot smarter than me can post a link?!
Pretty soon you might be educated, but probably not!
Rob, you don't live in Montana do you??

SS, Thanks for the reply! Interesting about Hogan. Never knew Nikon's 50mm f/1.2 is manual focus. Wondered why the fact that they chose to stay with their original F mount caused them to fall behind Canon in the lens development race. Someone here said that Canon has a larger mount than Nikon does. Are the electronics both the same? I have just as much Canon gear as Nikon and I "feel" that the Canon gear is "laid out" slightly better, and that the company is more customer friendly. The Nikon gear is every bit as good, as the Canon, they're both great!
The same with my Sony A-6000, that's the BEST ONE, of all three, by FAR! It's extremely well laid out, and small, and light weight; it takes gorgeous images, as nice as my Nikon D-7200 does. It's a VERY customizable camera!
I really love it! You should check one out, give one a try sometime. (No need, for the A-6300, unless you're really, itching to spend your money.)

I am not supposed to be on SS side as I hate Canon equipment but I must say that the EF mount was the smartest thing Canon did. The EF mount is full electronic and it's the way of the future as Canon has seen it since 1987. All the new mirrorless camera mount now are fully electronics because they are introduced recently. Nikon finally has something equivalent to the EF mount with their new type E lenses. But do you know that all Nikon cameras made before the D3 can not use these lenses? Also if you bought an EF lens in 1987 you can use it on any current Canon DSLR but if you bought a Nikkor in 1987 it won't AF on the D3xxx and D5xxx series of Nikon cameras. Nikon retain the F mount but had to changed it a bit at a time as new features in new cameras required it. That fact create a lot of incompatibility and in fact as a 40 year Nikon user without a chart I am not sure which lens does what on which camera.

I like this site's comparisons too, it is spec based but still very useful. D500 is clearly the better camera, Canon lovers have to wait for 7D Mark III.

7D2 or 80D. Most cameras are good enough today, just but the best one that uses your existing lenses at the time you need it.

Give the 80D a look also, your lenses will fit and its sensor is 24mp and a newer design than 7DII, plus it's new AF system will go 27 cross type focus points at f/8 with some lenses, like the 100-400L Mk II plus the 1.4X III. Plus the 80D has the anti-flicker that really helps indoors with the lighting.

I agree w Robert about the 80D. I own the 7D2 but bought it before 80D was an option. There are some aspects of the 80D that make it mighty appealing.
