When I travel, I usually only take my Canon 70D. I am not a Pro, and have never thought about taking a backup. I have an older 60D that is in excellent shape, and now I am wondering if I should take along both of them to Croatia in September. what are everyone's thoughts.

I would. Back up is important. Plus, you can have different lenses mounted on each one.

I think you should do as you think best, rather than copy what others would do.

If you like to lug, take both. If you have more than one lens, put the second-most-used lens on the 60D. With both around your neck, you can be ready for almost anything. My two favorite lenses would be about 17-55mm and 50-200mm on APS-C Canons (or 24-70mm and 70-200mm on full frame, or 12-35mm and 35-100mm on Micro Four-Thirds).

Backup is important if you have paying customers, or if the trip was expensive and you really want to come back with photos.

Of course, a relatively new iPhone or Samsung Android smartphone can go a LONG way as backup, and it's useful for hundreds of other more important reasons as well! Undoubtedly, there will be some places you won't want to drag the Canons.

Take two cameras but don't lug them around all the time. It's really only a backup in case your main camera dies. But keep a variety of lenses in your backpack while walking around. You'll need a wide angle for cathedrals and landscapes, telephoto for street photos. Or, a good zoom (I love my 28-300mm for travel) works well and lightens the weight.

Some travellers don't like to be bogged down with extra gear. Two interchangeable lenses is satisfactory for me. But you never know what May happen. Take any type of a backup camera, extra memory cards, batteries, and your charger. Have a great trip to Croatia.

Don't leave home without it. Over 40 years as a pro always had to have a back up. Camera and flashes.

Two good valid points. Get you a good carrier to carry both of them at times and you are all set.

Ugh lugging 2 DSLR's -- omg never !! You will wear your self out lugging all that crap. My recommendation: Take 1 DSLR, and take 1 really good point & shoot or mirrorless, AND if your doing any fun water things - bring a waterproof P&S. This is the trio (7DmII, sony RX100 IV, & Canon D30) I take on all my vacas, and it's always more than enough. Because even if your DSLR is working perfectly, you may just have an evening when you do not want to lug the beast one more step!!
Croatia -- awesome, Ive always wanted to go there !! Have fun!!

I am like you, as I have a Sigma 10-20, Canon 24-105 and 17-85. I never thought of a backup, but I have room for it in my backpack for traveling

This is the exact same approach I take. My trio is the Nikon d500, Sony rx100iv and nikon aw120. Works well fo me.

When people are planning a big trip, they often post here asking about what compact camera they should get for the trip. I would never bring two DSLRs on a trip. Do you have a decent compact camera you could bring, just in case?

I have always felt that a back up camera is very important if it is a "once in a lifetime" trip.
