GOP warns Obama: Action on Zika needed this week

Washington Examiner, 7/11/16 3:30 PM

"Congressional Republicans urged President Obama on Monday to immediately accept GOP legislation that would make it easier to spray pesticides to help fight the Zika v***s, after administration officials have said more spraying would help slow its spread.

Republicans from the House and Senate told Obama in a letter that the House-passed bill would lift a permit requirement that delays the spraying of pesticides that k**l mosquitoes that carry Zika. They pointed to administration officials who have called for aerial spraying in Puerto Rico, and said lifting the permit requirements would help states and territories fight the v***s more quickly.

The letter, led by Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio, also said failing to support the House bill would pose an immediate threat to all Americans this summer.

"If the administration does not work with Congress to address this potentially life-threatening issue, the Zika crisis in Puerto Rico will certainly spread to the continental United States, threatening the health and safety of all Americans, especially women of childbearing age and millions of unborn children," they wrote. "As [CDC] Director [Tom] Frieden said, the continental U.S. would have sprayed months ago if we had the alarming wide-spread Zika epidemic Puerto Rico is experiencing today."

"We must take action this week to quickly and appropriately commence a thorough mosquito abatement program, as included in the Zika conference package, immediately before the v***s spreads further," they added.

The permit was created under the Clean Water Act. It requires anybody who is spraying pesticides that may get into the water supply to get a permit.

The permit requirement "adds time-consuming, costly red tape that discourages regular aerial spraying for mosquitoes," Republicans wrote. "Pesticides used to k**l mosquitoes are already regulated by the [Environmental Protection Agency]."

House Republicans have tried to eliminate the permit before. The chamber passed a bill in May that was rebranded as the Zika Vector Control Act. Democrats fought the House bill, which passed by a 258-156 v**e in May but has not advanced in the Senate,by saying it was a veiled attack on environmental regulations....."

Zika bill is not getting anywhere due to the acrimonious state of politics. Republicans refuse to put up a clean bill that addresses the Zika problem. They purposefully attach provisions the left will not tolerate. Then the GOP can dance and say "We passed a bill, the Dems are blocking it."

Its pretty d********g to play politics with healthcare.

The Dems cry that the GOP is holding up funding. I doubt they are even trying to negotiate the GOP poison pills down to a tolerable level.

Compromise is a dirty word any more.

My opinion, blame falls on both sides. But, if the Repubs are putting provisions in the bill that are unrelated to dealing with the Zika issue, just so the left has to veto, they shoulder the majority of the blame.

The political acrimony that has been festering for twenty years, fueled by both sides, is ruining our government.

My impression is that it is not pork, but poison pills.

Pork is adding funding to pet programs.

GOP is inserting funding cuts to Democrat sacred cows.

Pork is self serving, poison pills are just to piss off the other side.

Oh, you mean nonsensical things are in the bill that have nothing to do with Zika? Kinda like all the b.s. in the Obamacare bill that had nothing to do,with coverage? Or all the crap in EVERY, SINGLE bill put before congress for the past generation?

You're right.......it sucks, but it is. We either want protection from the v***s or we don't.
