I just can't get the results that I want This was with a canon 10d and a 12 inch dobsonian telescope mabe if I would use the 50 or 60 d I would get better results. any suggestions would help. mabe I should go to a smaller scope with a motor to do longer exposures.

Great shot.
Did John Dobson show you how to make your 'scope? What a fantastic man-He is my wife's cousin - 96 now and still out there showing the moon & stars.

You need a clock drive and also, should use the good ol' "hat wave" exposure technique. The problem, at high magnification, is: your mirror flopping and shutter clicking can induce vibration in the image. Shooting at "bulb" with a "hat" or black card held in front of the telescope to block exposure, then, after waiting a few seconds for vibrations to settle, you "wave the hat" away from, then back over, the front of the telescope (without anyone touching the telescope.) This will cure most of the issues.

With telescopes like that, I don't know why they needed to spend all that money going to the moon......

I would use the Canon with "LiveView" for the best focusing. I use a Canon 40D and feed the LiveView to an external monitor. I also use the 10X on LiveView for extra critical focusing. I have got some pretty good results with an old Dynamax 8 SCT scope. I usually shoot at ISO 100-200 from 1/30-1/90th sec and the scope is f/10.

See my moon shots below.

That sure is him I have read stories where he would just build a scope on site and let evrer one there just go to town and look thru it. He called it sidewalk astronomy.

A little about " Telescope John Dobson"
John was born in Peiking China of Methodist Medical Missionaries - left in '28 - was a follower of an Eastern Religion/Belief -from '44 to around '58-9 was kicked out because of his astrology / telescope work with youth. Also took unauthorised leave to care for his dying father who was my mother-inlaw's brother the family was Missionairies in China from 1875 to 1928 - 3 generations.
The Sidewalk Astronomers were started by John Dobson and two young men he had helped to build telescopes. Since then, John has continued to travel the world speaking to astronomy clubs and other groups of people about telescopes and his views on the Universe.
