Can someone please tell me the difference between a fisheye lens and a wide angle lens? I really like the effect of the outer edges being bent and would like to experiment with it but I'm not sure which type to invest in or the differences between them. I also would like to know how the camera settings would be different to compensate for the bending if at all. I'd appreciate any input.

A fisheye is a specialty lens and will bend the edges around and give the appearance of looking in a round fishbowl.. With this lens, you need to watch that you don't get your feet in the frame because of the enormous distorted field-of-view..

A wide angle lens, and the latest ultra-wide angle, have some barrel distortion mitigation built in their design. You will still get bowed horizons and some pulling of the image at the edges the wider you go..

These are radically different lenses with different purposes, so don't confuse one for the other..

Basically the fisheye lens is a much more extreme form of wide angle whose barrel distortion is quite evident do to it's extreme angle of view.

Thank you so much. So, fisheye lenses are somewhat of a 'special effect' type result. What are the most common reasons for use of a wide angle lens? What are they designed for?

Group photos, framing large objects like ships, statues, buildings without needing to back up a city block with a snapshot lens. Wide angle lenses tens to have a wider depth of field, ie. they tend to get everything in focus, foreground, subject, background. Telephoto lenses are just the opposite, covering a very narrow angle of view and allowing for a shallower depth of field.

Oh, I forgot to ask. Do you know what I should expect to pay for a fisheye and/or a wide angle lens?

This was taken with a fisheye lens. I stood at the very edge of the concrete and was able to get in both sides of the half pipe.

Thanks... The thing to think about before you invest in a fish eye is how many pictures do you take where everything beside you (and on both sides of you) is part of the picture. I am literally just inches from the edge of the halfpipe.

Yes, that's what I'm learning - that you have to be careful to keep your feet out of the picture ha. I mostly will be taking nature photos and architectural photos. Downtown Buffalo is known for it's beautiful historic architectural buildings.

The fisheye can be fun in the city. You could always rent one just to see how you like it.
