My family and I have decided to fly from Tampa FL to Jackson WY May 2017 for a ten day visit.
Today, the tickets are $597 ea. If we wait, do you think we will find a better price?

I doubt it. The closer to the flight date you buy your tickets, the higher the price goes, unless there is some sort of special going on... Waiting and hoping for that "special" is kind of like gambling..

I subscribe to Kim Komando. It's mainly about computers & some photography but she also has helpful hints about pretty much everything. Here's a link to her article about what day to buy airline tickets:

There are very limited flights into Jackson (it is a challenging airport and I have read that it takes extra training to be certified to land there), so the prices are always high. Many people fly elsewhere and rent a car. Billings, Montana puts you "near" the East Gate of Yellowstone but many people fly in to Salt Lake or Denver. We flew into Jackson years ago, but I used frequent flier miles, because it was very expensive - about $600 as I recall.

At the "last minute," prices could rise or fall, but why take the chance? Do online comparisons and take the best price. Wait too long, and the plane will be full.

Thanks. Good to know. You have to wonder why they build airports in locations where flying is dangerous. There was a recent article about an airport built by the English on an island. It turned out to be too dangerous to use - total waste.

Having said that, I flew into Jackson two years ago for a tour of Yellowstone and the area. All went well. They told us why Jackson Hole is so named. Looking around, the town seems to be in a hole - surrounded by mountains. All those mountains create difficult flying conditions.

I'd get your ticket sooner rather than later. (Speaking from experience :( )

Closer alternatives include Idaho Falls, ID and Bozeman, MT. IF is about 2 hrs from Jackson and Bozeman about an hour from the north entrance to YNP. Used to be able to fly into West Yellowstone but when I looked into that a few years back not any more.

But you should get hotel reservations early. The Asian Invasion has taken over the area. China has discovered Yellowstone. There are 1.3 billion of them...all seemingly wanting to come to Yellowstone. My son is going over to IF this weekend for our greatgranddaughters first birthday and couldn't get a hotel room within 100 miles....and IF is about that from Yellowstone.

Usually you get better prices about three months ahead. But due to limited capacity and the Asian Invasion I'd book early. $500 is about the best we usually get from Boise to Tampa...about the same trip but much higher flight availability vs. demand.

Have you checked out any of the cheap flight sites on the internet?

Thanks for the link, lots of tips.

Thanks to all for the info. I'm taking your advise; going to book sooner.
Maybe fly into Idaho Falls because we will be leaving from Gardner to go to the airport for home. Total flight time about 6 hours, will be tired.
My wife checks all the discount sites daily.

Is renting a 4 wheel drive SUV worth the extra cost of a standard SUV in late May?
