There are very limited flights into Jackson (it is a challenging airport and I have read that it takes extra training to be certified to land there), so the prices are always high. Many people fly elsewhere and rent a car. Billings, Montana puts you "near" the East Gate of Yellowstone but many people fly in to Salt Lake or Denver. We flew into Jackson years ago, but I used frequent flier miles, because it was very expensive - about $600 as I recall.
Closer alternatives include Idaho Falls, ID and Bozeman, MT. IF is about 2 hrs from Jackson and Bozeman about an hour from the north entrance to YNP. Used to be able to fly into West Yellowstone but when I looked into that a few years back not any more.
But you should get hotel reservations early. The Asian Invasion has taken over the area. China has discovered Yellowstone. There are 1.3 billion of them...all seemingly wanting to come to Yellowstone. My son is going over to IF this weekend for our greatgranddaughters first birthday and couldn't get a hotel room within 100 miles....and IF is about that from Yellowstone.
Usually you get better prices about three months ahead. But due to limited capacity and the Asian Invasion I'd book early. $500 is about the best we usually get from Boise to Tampa...about the same trip but much higher flight availability vs. demand.
