Trip of a lifetime
This was prompted by the "$10,000 bass boat" thread.
What, so far, has been your 'trip of a lifetime'? I think I've probably had two, each about a month long: in 1990 touring South India on a motorcycle with my wife, and in 2009 taking my wife and daughter in a Land Rover through France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosova, Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Both times I used Leicas and Nikons.
How about you?
Cheers,
R.
Had some good ones in the US. but had 2 that did it for me , one year went to Australia and Fiji and the following year went to New Zealand and Tahiti. both trip were great . Had a couple of skiing trips to europe that were up there also. they were all between 89 and 94, back in the film days.
Most of my decent trips have been centered around Caribbean cruises. I try to do one a year. So far it has been Cozumel, Progresso, Key West, Bahamas, St Thomas, St Maarten, Puerto Rico, Domenica, St Kitts, Barbados, Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay.
I would love to go thru Europe some day and photograph much of the ancient architecture there.
You're right about that, Roger. While on a cruise you still spend your nights, at the very least , on the ship. For example, we've been to St Thomas 3 times now and like it very much, but we really don't really know what it would be like to live there. Even for a few days.
So far, my vacation trips of a lifetime has been transiting the Panama Canal and gong from Barcelona to the US on a transatlantic crossing. Upcoming is a trip (also a cruise) to Alaska.
Now, if only I can figure out how to get back to some of the places I went for the Military and for work over the past 40+ years:
- Outback of Australia
- New Zealand
- Thailand
- The Aleutian Islands
- Iceland
- Iceland

When I was in the Navy we spent 9+ months in the Mediterranean and visited Barcelona, Mallorca, Marseilles, Golf Juan, Trieste, Venice, Naples, Genoa, Taranto, Valletta, Athens, Thessaloniki and Istanbul. My favorite liberty port though was Subic Bay/Olongapo City in the Philippines.

I would love to go through the Panama Canal.
So far, my trip of a lifetime was three wonderful weeks in Alaska. We flew into Anchorage, took a train to Denali, spent two nights there including a bus tour deep into the park. Then, took another train to Fairbanks where we got on a bus for the two day journey over 400 miles up the Dalton Highway (of Ice Road Trucker fame) to Prudhoe Bay, stepped into the Arctic Ocean, flew back to Anchorage, took another train to Seward, then got on a cruise ship through the inside passage down to Vancouver, BC. There we rented a car and drove up the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler (the summer before the Winter Olympics) for two days. Then, flew back to Houston.
In a couple years we will be flying to Scandinavia and taking a cruise up into the Baltic Sea. Then, after retirement, the plan is to take a cruise around New Zealand. We long to see the land of The Lord of the Rings. But, those are for another day.
For those that have been asking about the cruises, they offer you the chance to visit many ports without constant unpacking and repacking as well as offering scenery that cant be reached by land transportation but, I have to say, that drive up the Dalton Highway is one I will never forget.

When you're about to come down this way, flick me a PM, would be great if we could meet up somewhere. Oh, and if you're planning on visiting the Bay of Plenty on the North Island, a must-do is the tour to White Island, NZ's only active marine volcano, 'tis an awesome experience, I've done it 3 times and plan on going again some time.
