And don't forget to RENT one prior to purchase. The unsavory taste of a poor purchase is long remembered after the smell of a sweet deal..... Not all autofocus lenses will work with the D5300.

Thank you for all the information, very helpful. The"zoom" lens I own is the NikoN 55-200MM. Armed with all this info, now to decide.

I currently own a Nikon d3100, I have the kit lens as well as a decent zoom. I am looking for advice on what wide angle lens would be best. I have looked into a Tamron 18-24. I like to shoot nature and landscapes, as well as the grandkids (when they sit still long enough). What would someone recommend, plus I don't want to spend alot. Want to keep my gas to the minimum.

I own the Tokina 12-28 f/4 and use it with my D7100 & D7000. I love this lens because it produces sharp photos and has a great walk around shooting range for travel that includes the ability to capture people, city and landscapes. It is also light and very sturdy. I still like to use it even though I now have a D750 and a Nikon 16-35 f/4 VR. As Imagemeister states you can also use the Tokina with a full frame camera, I have done so and the images were very good but with a reduced range. I have never had an issue of blurred photos with the Tokina even though it does not have VR plus it is 5 ounces lighter than the 16-35. Did I really need the 16-35 ? Maybe not. Good luck with your choice.
