How do you say it?

I've always said it like it's a word "ISO"

I've heard people say "I-S-O"

Which is correct?

Its letters, not a word. Short for International Standardization Organization.

Older ASA (American Standard), and newer ISO (International Standard, way of rating film/sensor sensitivity. :) No more, no less. :) Quote: I - SOOOO. Sort of like aw-soooo.

Initials pronounced as a word are called acronyms. LASER is an acronym. FBI, CIA, ASA, DEA are not.

My manufacturing industry is saturated with ISO requirements. I have never heard the letters pronounced as the acronym eye-sew. As a serious photographer of 40-years, I have heard the letters DIN pronounced as an acronym, but never ISO pronounced as an acronym. It will be interesting to see if ISO becomes an accepted acronym.

Neither have I and when I started photography it was still ASA. I've always heard it pronounced eye-ess-oh.

Among journalists and manufacturers, normally EYE-SO, rarely EYE-ESS-OH.

Cheers,

R.

I've been in aircraft manufacturing all my adult life and I've heard ISO pronounced "eye-so" from the start. :)

ac·ro·nym
   [ak-ruh-nim] Show IPA
noun
1.
a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words, as Wac from Women's Army Corps, OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range navigation.

Although FBI and FAA ARE all created from the first letters of the words they represent, I guess they are NOT Acronyms because they do NOT form a pronounceable WORD - as LASER does. Since ISO is pronounceable following standard grammatical interpretation, once it becomes acceptable as a word - then I guess it will be an Acronym. Laser pretty much became a word immediately. Among those that use it - ISO is essentially a word that means PIA.
