What does Windows Do to my Photos?

I always alternate slide shows of recent trips on my computer monitor. Though my shots look fine in Elements or NX 2, some of them look really great in the Windows slide shows. I know the proportions are changed, and some times the crop, but does anyone know what else they do? Any knowledgeable input appreciated!

There's a tiny little clone of Steve McCurry sitting in the video card of your computer who quickly photo-shops each picture before it reaches the screen!

Too Soon???

Auto enhance is probably turned on in your Windows Photo App.

Bill de -- thanks! I haven't got 10 yet, but I figured it was something like that. I will have to rummage around in the Windows Photo Gallery and see what I can find. All I have used that for is the slide shows -- it is NX 2 or Elements for anything else. Appreciate your reply!

If you are a Creative Cloud subscriber or have Adobe Bridge use the slide show feature of Bridge.

I don't understand the question. "what else they do?" What exactly are you using as a slide show program? Windows? What is happening (exactly) that you don't like when the slide show is running? You say some look great in the Window slide show, but proportions are changed and sometimes the crop?

My guess is that the slideshow is showing you what the image looks like after you've done some processing and cropping and that the sizes of the images aren't all the same when viewed on your slide show. If this is the case, then just make sure that your images are nearly the same pixel dimensions before you put them in the slideshow. Another thing that may be happening is that your colors may be off when viewed in your slideshow. It would help to know exactly which program you are using to show the images. If your slideshow has something to do with your browser, then it may be a problem with the colorspace that the images are save as. Some images that are viewed in a browser that are anything but sRGB colorspace, will have colors that are off - some will be way off. So it's best to use sRGB when viewing them on the web, sending as email, or saved as some kind of slideshow viewed in Windows.

My suggestion is to find some of the images that offend you and resize the pixel dimensions to be similar or the same, then make sure the colorspace is changed or is sRGB. Save them by giving them different names and then view them in the slideshow program you are currently using. You'll probably have different (good) results.

I believe the OP is saying that some look better in the slide show and he wants to see why/how.

Zactly! The difference is not usually very noticeable, but some shots look considerably better than the original. I have matched the crop and edited a bit here and there, but have not managed to duplicate the look of the best slide show versions. I noticed that there is an auto adjust function in the Windows Photo App which I have never used -- don't in NX2 or Elements either. May be something in that. Anyway, thanks for the responses. I thought one of our computer heavies might have a quick answer.
