am I one the right track - composition wise ?

As far as I am concerned, yes, you certainly are. Just remember I am still working upward to amatuer status so don't put too much faith in my opinions.
2nd Photo should have more of the 'rule of thirds' in it.
But nice

The first one seemed to be dominated by the tree so here's my suggestion. Let me know what you think?
The second one would be ok if it was titled 'the tree' but if it's about the intake canal..........
The ducks are really good but an alternative would be to shoot from maybe a couple of feet lower down (a crouch?) to give them a slightly different perspective. But nice composition.

My opinion. The first shot is exactly the way I would shoot it because I really like the dimension of objects in the foreground... it lends perspective to the shot.
However, in that shot, is the horizon slightly high on the left? Or is it just my eyes.

..And the first photo, while very nice, I think would benefit from shortening the foreground a bit to the very edge of the river bank foreground , giving more emphasis to the rest of the scene, which holds more interest. The second photo is busy, and the central figure is just that,,as noted, far too central.
I like the first and last but wasn't coming up with much to do on the middle. I attended a free lecture at our camera store this morning on using Photoshop (including Elements) filters. So I decided to try one thing he demonstrated. After the suggested crop I plastic wrapped your palm tree.
:P
interesting - not my thing but nice version and technique
thank you all for the suggestions for improvement
NOW it can be called "The Tree"!
Good idea.
