I have been shooting this little bug(less than 2mm) all day and just can't seem to get it focused. canon5Dmk2, canom100mm f2.8L is, canon ring flash. Manual focus, 1/200, f22, flash 1/1.
hand held. It has been windy all day and this is the only subject i have come up with. Is this just poor focus or hand shaking or what?
1.) Trashline Orb Weaver (Cyclosa turbinata).
2.) I see by your Exif info, that you set your camera to ISO 400, 1/200-sec at f/22, and you stated Canon ringflash was 1:1 (full output). Background is properly exposed, but the spider & web is overexposed. Dropping your flash output to 1:2 (1/2 power) or 1:4 (1/4 power) would provide proper exposure to spider, and retain same DOF.
Manual focus and a windy day?? Even the slightest of breezes will play havoc on getting a tack sharp image. I rarely use my ringflash in anything but manual, full power is usually overkill.

thanks I'll keep trying.
If you want a DARKER background, shoot everything the same at ISO 200 or even ISO 100. Your ringflash will expose the spider, but sunlight-exposed background will be a stop or two darker.
even if all your settings are good, you would need luck to get a good shot of one of those little guys on a windy day.tom
