Last saturday was my first attempt at shooting the high speed action in the calf roping arena. the specs on this shot are f5.6 1/160 55mm ISO 1600...couldn't quite get the exposure down...this has been tweaked in PSE9....I would really appreciate any advice on shooting this type of shot

They look pretty good to me. Do you have a speedlight? That would help if you can use one at the rodeo. It would allow you to get your ISO down2 to help with the noise.

I shoot in low light a lot. If you can shoot RAW, you can shoot about 2 stops under exposed and fix in lightroom. A trick I use sometimes shooting indoors. Allows for lower ISO and shutter speed up a bit. A monopod is a must.

thanks Ray....a speedlight might be a good investment.....not sure about the monopod...to get above the railings I had to up to the top of the bleachers but probably still have used my monopod.

Don't know if you've ever been to a calf roping competition but it is fast and furious...we got there after the competition
started so there wasn't time to pre-shoot and tweak settings.
It was a great deal of fun and a real learning experience...thanks for your help!!

One problem you have here is the backlighting from the wall panels. You need to bump up your ISO some more or use a faster lens to get a little faster shutter speed. Spot metering the horse might help also if you can do that. A speedlight with a Better Beamer would get you the reach you need, if they are allowed. Often they are not allowed because they distract the animals as well as the riders.

Thanks MT...I knew you would have some "fixes" and good advice.

I like the timeing of this shot. The slack in the rope as the rider begins his dismount and the horse sets his breaks mekes me think about what will happen next.

nice shots...im new at this also...maybe a little above "entry" level shooter...im limited on budget and have tried
using my kit lens (nikon 55-200 and 18-55) but fstops to high.
i have shot indoor basketball using both lens and started
playing with ev increases...this supposedly lies to the camera and says things are dark so the camera will make adjustments.;
you might try a few test shots with your original settings used for these pics but add +e2 or e3...see what happens...lol

thanks for the kind words...I was with a group of people touring the Denton County horse ranches and we made this a spur of the moment stop so I had very little time to set up (such as it was) and get a few shots...there were a few that had better exposure but lacked the "action" of this one...I love rodeo and will be shooting more next month at an arena that will have much better lighting...I'll be there early and pre-shooting to get my exposure down before the events start

Getting there early and giving myself time to set up works for me. I need all the help I can get esp. when trying to capture fast action. I love rodeo too. Keep shooting and posting.
