Lens mounting problem

I have a Nikon 35mm 1.8 Dx lens that out of the blue is really hard to get on and off. I have never had any problem with it before, not dropped or damaged but now it goes on and about halfway it gets really tight I am almost afraid to lock in place. Same way when taking it off. I mounted 3 other lenses on both bodies that I have and it is the same so it is not the camera itself. Does anyone have any ideas. The lens is probably not worth spending a lot of money on, you can buy refurb for around $200. Any UHH members know of any repair service? Thanks in advance....John

Check te small screws around the lens mount, one may have loosened. It is also possible that ther is a small ding, dent, or bend in the lens bayonet mount.

Check and see if you may have a loose bayonet mount screw that could be interfering with the mounting.

Right. Examine it closely with a magnifying glass, and look for differences between that lens and your others. Let us know how this turns out.

Is it possible the weather seal on the lens mount is damaged or out of place? It's a thin rubber gasket on the lens mount. If it's getting distorted when the lens is mounted that would be a problem. It should compress a little when the lens is mounted. I found this photo online of someone pulling a weather seal out of its groove

Call Nikon. If that doesn't work, a great repair place is Tempe Camera in Tempe, Arizona. They don't charge for diagnosis. >Alan

I'll second this opinion. If not Nikon, Tempe Camera ( http://www.tempecamera.biz ) is the only place I'd take any photo equipment for repair.

Clean both the body mount frame and lense mount (alcohol and cotton swab). Give both a thorough examination, especially the lense mount. Look for scrap marks or signs of binding. If signs of binding, see what matchs that pattern. Check and retighten the lense mount screws. Then check the seal for rubbing or binding. Some chemical exposures will cause swelling. The seal should be easy enough to replace on your own if not in good shape. No findings - off to the repair shop.

Thanks to everyone who answered. I have cleaned, tightened, checked, then did it again with no noticeable difference. I know for a fact that it was fine just a couple of weeks ago and the only place it has been is in my bag. Looks like I will call Nikon tomorrow and see if they have any ideas. Thanks again!

If it is a plastic mount there could be heat warpage if it was left in a hot car?
