Photomatix gives you a lot more control and options, over the HDR merging process than the LR HDR tool. An almost infinite number of possibilities.

I too am new to HDR. I noted with interest that you used Photomatix to create your composite. The only HDR that I've done was processed using whatever HDR software that is included with Lr CC. That software may in fact be NIK's HDR add-on. Compared to the pop of your image, mine has so little I decided not to post it. Perhaps there are other hogs who have tried the Lr CC version and would care to provide their comments.

Hello Bunkershot, please credit rgrenaderphoto for the "pop" in my photo.. mine was flat and probably would have stayed that way no matter what I did!

As a result of your post I'll download trial version of Photomix Essentials and run my images through that and do a comparison. I'm still hoping for a Lr CC guru to shed some light on whether it uses NIK HDR software or an Adobe HDR application. Just curious.

If you have Nik HDRefex it can be launched by LR if you choose Nik specifically in the LR menu; otherwise it is Adobe's formulation.

Thanks much for this info. I believe it must be Adobe's formulation.

Given the subject matter and the overcast sky you did as well as could be expected. It's a nicely exposed photo. Most 1st attempts at HDR are WAY over-cooked. Yours is very nicely done. It looks perfectly exposed.

My first HDR shot with Canon 20D and 17-55mm
I recently downloaded Photomatix Essentials and started there. Already forgot what preset I chose ( need a notebook) twigged in PE first with sliders then to Photoshop curves and lastly touch up in Lightroom. The down load doesn't pop for me... perhaps I will get better on the next shot. Trish

That may be because of the featureless, milky sky
