Gun Deck of The Temeraire

The guy in the foreground is fending-off borders whilst his messmates attend to the business of the deck. It must have been hell - these re-enactors had an excellent set-up representing one gun mess (the small group that lived and worked together, eating, sleeping and fighting in this one small area). The demonstration included clearing the deck as battle commenced, loading and firing the gun, then dealing with borders. They represent part of the crew of The Temeraire (aka The Fighting Temeraire, of Turner fame). Apparently it was the only ship to have been recorded as having two enemy ships lashed alongside and to win. Presumably due to it's height, which allowed for firing down onto the deck of the enemy and causing mayhem. It was the true hero of Trafalgar, as The Redoubtable was alongside The Victory and about to take her when Temeraire rammed her and gave her a double broadside, which proved conclusive.

I've composited two shots from different cameras and used a number of layers to add colour and texture. Can't say I'm entirely happy with the result, but would be pleased to have your opinion and suggestions.

Appears to be done rather well to me magneto, nit pick...I'd like to see just a bit more of the silver shine from the handle up of the sword but not so much as to draw too much attention.

This is fun and must have been fun to do. I like the results very much. Are your a fan of Patrick O'Brian? I agree, the Temeraire may well have been the true hero Trafalgar. I hope you have more photos from the re-enactment to share. Nice post magnetoman, thanks!
Regards, Phil

I have not read O'Brian Phil, but may well start now you've put me onto him - sounds like he would appeal to me as I love Bernard Cornwell and CS Forresters books, and O'Brian apparently used the same technique as Cornwell in placing his characters in actual historical events. The guys doing the Temeraire set-up had only the gun deck scene - it was cleverly constructed such that it fitted on a small trailer, so could be towed around easily. So not much more than that to photograph with them. However, the event was a mixed history event, so plenty of other photos to play with. Many thanks for looking and commenting - and for the O'Brian tip.
