My menagerie of free range pets is growing and now there's night time competition for the peanut box...

Thank you. They are cute little critters, and hard to see since they only come out at night. Guess that's why they have those big eyes.

Thank you.
Years ago, when I used to go up to the Poconos quite often, one of the many different routes I'd take when riding my motorcycle included a stretch on rt 115, right through Effort. I always liked that area, far enough away from the metro area to be like, out in the country, yet close enough to everything.

At night the flying squirrels visit the peanut box; during the day it's ruled buy the big squirrels and the chipmunks. Every once in a while one of the more adventurous Bluejays will take peanuts from the box. I've seen Cat birds sitting on it but not for the peanuts; a suet feeder hangs about a foot above it.

I live right off 115 and right next to state game lands so I have trees all around me. It's like having a few thousand acres of land and only have to pay taxes on 2 and 1/2 acres and lots of animals....Rich

Good pics of a rarely photographed subject, I should think. Did you use a motion sensor/trigger?

From what I've read, few people actually see them because they are nocturnal and rather small and spend most of their time up in the trees. No sensors except my eyes. I sit in the shadows waiting for them to appear. There's a very dim light about 10 feet from the peanut box. I sit in the darkness and wait until the come scurrying down the tree looking for a free meal. There's just enough light to know when they are there.

This very interesting. I have a lot of squirrels here but I haven't seen any flying ones unless they only come out at night....Rich

Flying squirrels are nocturnal. They usually leave their nests in search of food well after the sun has set when most of their predators are in for the night. They're smaller than a regular gray squirrel, about half the size, but larger than their cousins the chipmunks. I've only seen one in flight and they don't really fly, they glide. When scurrying up a tree, they're amazingly fast. Mount a peanut box on a tree and fill it at night, they will eventually find it. They're found all over the eastern half of the US from Maine to Florida.
