Were these taken in the middle of the day? The last one looks good, but I think the first two are overexposed (look at his cheeks and fingers).

I enjoyed the happy, relaxed expression of the cute boy in the last 2 pics the most. The lighting seemed the best in those 2 pics also.

Unfortunately, some of the worst light for photography is still at that time of day.

Shade is good, if it is available. Assuming you are shooting manual, aperture or shutter priority, you might try dropping the exposure a bit (faster shutter, smaller aperture or lower ISO). For practice, put a light colored object in the sun and take a series of shots at different exposures.

Thank u!! :) I will try that. I didnt want the shade. I just wanted to practice in this direct light. Cause its pretty hard. I want to better myself with this light.

I have a diffuser/reflector set I have used in harsh light. It helps even out the shadows and soften the lighting, but requires a helper.

Good luck.

Would a bed sheet stretched over the subject do as a diffuser? My idea is it would soften the light.

Yes, this will provide shade, diffusing the harsh light. This could be fun on windy days.

As usually happens. Try the exposure tests and see if that helps. If you have a polarizing filter, it may or may not help - I've never tried it in this situation. Likewise a Neutral Density filter will decrease the light but I don't think it will do anything about harsh shadows. If you have them, try them out in your tests.

It has evened the lighting out a bit. This one is my favorite of the four. I really like the perspective and balance - a nice, natural look.

then you just need to keep practicing and it will help if you adjust the attitude that says "oh the light is too harsh - oh the light could be better."
