High contrast side-lighting, narrow DOF, and moving subjects are three reasons I use a 3/4-circle O-Flash.

Yes...black ants in the shadows...and fast movers at that. Next chance I get I'll use my ring light and a tripod.

Forget the tripod! For most insects you have to be able to compose on the fly, which requires hand-held macro-photography. Start at ISO 400, 1/200-sec at f/22, adjust ringflash for proper exposure.
