Sky View Ap for iPhone: awesome!

Just a heads-up about this free AP I found for the iPhone. It goes by your location (gps in the phone) and the date and time, and you hold it up to the night sky and it tells you the names of stars and planets, and outlines the major constellations. It is very neat!

Been using Google SkyMap for a couple of years, it's great! You can even find things in the sky by asking it to locate them.

Do you need to be on line for it to work?

Not sure... I've only used it from home so far, being close to my router.
I also have 4g on so it might go through that if necessary.

I have it on my ipad and it doesn't work w/o wifi.

But I recently acquired iphone so will have to put it on that and try. I live in an area without cell service and the places I go for dark skys also generally do not have crll service either (Idaho).

It doesn't work as nicely on my tablet because my tablet does not have a compass in it, my cell phone does. I imagine it would at least need your location (GPS).
Addendum- FYI - I found this on the details at Google Play:

Do I need an internet connection?
No, but some functions (like entering your location manually) won't work without one. You'll have to use the GPS or enter a latitude and longitude instead.

It looks like it's available for Android, too.

No - I used it out at the beach last week. I don't know if it uses the cell connection or not. If not, it really stores a lot of data.

SkyPortal by Celestron Telescopes does this; will control the GoTo on the Celestron Evolution line of telescopes; and is also free for iPhone, iPad, and Android. It is independent of internet connections once downloaded.
