I posted this pic because this bird seems to have no striking colors like most of the vibrant blues and greens seen in the other hummer posts on this site. So I guess all hummers are not alike.

Certainly all hummers are not alike, but the colors you see, especially the gorget, are totally dependent on the angle of reflected light from the bird. It appears that your light is scattered, shaded light and this results in little color. Another time and different light and this bird may "light up" with beautiful iridescent color.

Ditto, but you might use some flash. Flash/fill flash will bring out the colors. Some on here even informed us on their multiple flash setups. Try searching for humming bird with flash.

I agree, but in my hands, nothing replaces properly angled sunlight. Obviously time and place dictate how that will work. Flash(es) help and certainly create other advantages when taking photos of hummers, but I often only get partial iridescence from the hummer when using flash.

Pretty sure that this is a female, which usually does not have the vivid colors of the males.

Cute! I find it interesting that she chose a man-made structure for her nest. Every hummer nest I've seen have been in trees and large bushes.

This is the only one I've ever seen, so it's news to me. Thanks for looking.
