Back from the west coast of Vancouver Island, a dreary day, with perpetual mist from the surf and ever blowing wind. Basically an "I've been there" shot.

I'd like to see a bit more detail from the foreground rocks. I believe the stronger presentation is a crop in from the left and down from the top. The crop being the more important suggestion. The rock is a great anchor and can lead you deep into the scene.

There's nothing wrong with your photo, only the post processing. This could be much better with a full sized original to work with, but there is plenty of color and detail in the image.

If I only had your version randomeyes then Vancouver Island would not be on my must see list but ol' btbg has done a sterling job for the local tourism board.

I'm pretty certain that there was no way you could have gotten a higher viewpoint, (maybe climbed to the top of your tripod?) it's just that I feel like I would like to see just a bit more of the water.

Other than that I reckon you've captured the bleakness of the scene very well indeed. Makes me feel cold looking at it.

Rob.

You could be right. The sky may be overdone. This post was done to the initial statement about how grey everything was and the second post that said that there needed to be more details in the rocks.

There is now more details in the rocks. If you look at my post you will see that it says that I could have done a better job with a full sized original. Then I could have used layers to get the detail in the foreground and mask off the sky so that it stayed more grey.

However, with that said, There is often sky approximately that color on the Oregon and Washington coasts. I don't know about the coast of Vancouver Island as I have only been there once or twice and have mostly been on the east side of the island, which is a beautiful place.

The reason that you don't see those colors more often in photos is because of the dynamic range capabilities of cameras. When you expose to get the details in the foreground the sky tends to overexpose.

So thanks for your opinion. I appreciate it.

Here are a couple, taken from the Wild Pacific Trail. The trees are stunted and grow in the direction dictated by the prevailing wind.

I like the mood of the foggy rugged coast very much. So similar to Maine, which is a good reminder of why I haven't yet made the Washington coast a must-see destination

I liked Frank's suggestion for a crop, so here is the image trimmed, with a bit more detail and light on foreground, but trying to keep the mood of the conditions - for your consideration.

I also like the first of the two vertical shots you posted. Spectacular coastline.

This is much brighter in download. Must not be srgb.

Linda, your version is right on! I have Vancouver Island on my must see list, to spend some time there.
