Does anyone have an update as to when the Eos 5d mark 1v will be available and what size sensor it will have?
Reasonable expectations are that the 5D Mark IV will be announced in August, start shipping early this Fall and will have a 24MP, full frame sensor.
There are fairly strong confirmations of this... some "leaks" about pre-production models now in the hands of some photographer who are testing them... Though I still wouldn't wager any money on exact specifications or release date.
24MP is likely because it's expected to be a "4K capable" video camera and apparently there is some limitation on sensor size associated with that. Keep in mind that the 5D was a ground-breaking camera in its video capablities and Canon has carefully built on that with subsequent models. There also has been suggestion that 120 fps video will be possible (up from 60 fps), which will make Slo Mo possible.
Another reason for a modest resolution sensor in the 5DIV... Canon already has the 50MP 5DS and 5DS-R models (which are essentially the same as 5DIII in most other respects).
It is not known or expected if there will be any significant changes to the AF system in the 5DIV.... the 5DIII's is pretty darned good and still competitive.
The 5DIV might get a CFast memory card slot (now only found on the 1DXII), which looks like CompactFlash but is as much as 3X faster and has potential for much larger capacity: 500GB CFast is available now, 1TB are planned for the future. CFast might be useful or needed with 4K video... it may be able to increase the duration of video clip, but also keep in mind that 4 minutes of 4K video fills a 16GB memory card! CFast competes with XQD memory, developed by Sony and in use of some Nikon too. CFast and XQD are not interchangeable (so we have a Beta versus VHS, or Blue Ray versus HD DVD, or Xune versus iPod thing happening again
).
4K video also will support "frame grabs" better than lower resolution video modes... This means the camera might be able to shoot usable 8MP stills as fast as 120 frames per second. Now, it remains to be seen if the camera can do 4K at 120 fps... It might only be able to do 60 fps or 30 fps or 24 fps at its maximum resolution. But even if it can only do 4K at the slower frame rates, the potential for usable frame grabs is still great. Even 24 fps is a whole heck of a lot faster than the 6 fps the current 5DIII can do (though that's also at that camera's full 22MP resolution).
Other fairly strongly rumored key features...
- Digic 7 processor? (Are dual processors needed for 4K? 5DIII uses Digic 5.)
- Up to 7 frame per second.
- ISO 100-51200, expandable to 50 and 102400, at least. Maybe even to 204800.
- Built-in WiFi and GPS (GPS.... probably. I'm skeptical about WiFI.... Canon normally doesn't put WiFi in the magnesium-bodied cameras and instead sells separate, profitable WFT modules that are faster, more reliable, have much greater range
and no doubt are profitable!)
- Dual memory card slots, no doubt... But will they be CFast + SD? Or CFast + CompactFlash? Or, will Canon offer a choice?
There are also strong rumors that the 5DIV will get a new kit lens (instead of the current 24-105/4L). Not a lot is known, but it is expected to be an L and very likely to be compatible with the new video-oriented PZ-E1 Power Zoom module (which currently only works with the new EF-S 18-135mm IS USM that was introduced along with the 80D, but that's a crop sensor only lens not usable on a full frame 5D-series camera).
I also would expect we'll see Dual Pixel Live View autofocus incorporated in the 5DIV, it's been an excellent improvement on most models from the 70D onward (mid-2013).
And, I expect the 5DIV to get a built-in intervalometer, similar to what's been included in a couple other recent Canon DSLRs.
And, I imagine the new camera will incorporate Canon's Flicker Free mode... same as found on 80D, 7DII and 1DXII (5DS?), corrects for common exposure problem with fluorescent lighting (and works!)
