Every time I drive into town, I pass a gun shop that offers gun safety courses. This guy should have taken one.

Just because people take safety courses doesn't mean they will practice what they learned.

Sad, but there is no such thing as an accidental discharge. Someone or something had to pull the trigger for the gun to discharge. Keeping a loaded gun in a duffel bag(without being in a holster which would have covered the trigger) is a very stupid thing to do, and cost this man his life. A lot more people drive cars recklessly and cause the deaths of innocent people and themselves.

They amuse me when they say " accidental discharge " it is a discharge by someone pulling the trigger , end of story , next case !!!

Dying so young stupidly is a shame !!!!

The absolute stupidity of keeping a shell in the firing chamber is what kills and injures so many supposed intelligent gun owners as well as innocent bystanders is incomprehensible. There is only one thing that will stop this from happening more often and that is massive publication of these incidents the same as drunk driving.
I wonder how many people both gun owners and non gun owner practice RULE #1:
There is NO SUCH THING AS AN UNOLADED GUN TILL YOU PERSONALLY EXAMINE IT TO MAKE SURE IT IS.
Here to is where the majority of gun related accidents happen.

And , after making sure it is UNLOADED , just think that IS NOT !!! If you can live with this statement you will be OK !!!

Again the gun is to be treated as if it were still loaded by following all the suggested safety handling methods
"IF NOT" shi$ still can happen..

A fire arm is just another piece of dangerous equipment and you have to treat it the same or someone can get hurt.
Like driving your car.
In my time of driving ambulance in the mountains of CA - I never went on a gun related call but many automobile calls.

not necessarily true .... as an example .... a round is jammed in the chamber .... as you are trying to clear the round ... your hand slips .... accidental discharge ... no finger on the trigger ... I have seen people try to clear a round without considering their surroundings ....

Not sure what you are saying. Sounds like you're talking about a failure to extract. If the round goes off it means you pulled the trigger(even if unintentionally). One has to practice clearing all the types of failures while keeping clear of the trigger at all times! Have you heard the expression TF outta TG unless you are firing?

I grew up with a shooting range in our basement. My mother, father, and brother all shot, as did I. I have owned my own guns since I was eight years old. At 11, I gave a talk on firearm safety to my sixth grade class (public school.) My principal had me present my talk to him first. He approved and I used my Winchester 52 to provide positive examples of safe firearm handling. Can you see that happening today? I have spent a lifetime in formal competition. When I went through a concealed carry class I was dumbfounded by a couple of the other attendees' lack of respect for safety - nothing outright dangerous, just joking around and being goofy. Quite frankly, they needed a class in maturity. I am a Life Member of the NRA, but I feel scared by some of the crazy people allowed to have guns. Felons in possession of a firearm are in violation of federal laws - lock them up. Sorry, everyone, I am getting worked up and I am too old to get upset. Children should be taught to respect firearms.

if you have a semi automatic with a round jammed in the chamber .... you pull the bolt back ... however if your hand slips as you are trying to eject the round and the bolt goes forward ... the jammed round will in most cases ...fire ......

You are so right. Look at the picture of Nancy Palosi holding an AR-15. She is supposed to have a concealed license. Magazine in the rifle (is there bullets in the magazine), finger on the trigger & rifle pointed at a woman standing to her left. I think she was sleeping when she took her concealed weapons class. the first thing they teach you in those classes is gun safety.

here is part of the problem ..... 35 years ago, my son was 9 years old ..... in NJ the minimum age was 10 for a hunting license ... I lied about his age and both he an I took the Hunter Safety course so that we could obtain a hunting license ... I finished the test in 10 minutes and my 9 year old son finished the test in 15 minutes ....we both passed .... however there were adults at the test site who had difficulty passing even after an hour .... so ... the test proctors took those who had trouble passing and instructed them individually ... in fact they all but answered the questions for them guess what .... everyone taking the test that day passed ..... I hope things have changed in 35 years ...
